TTRRUUCES – The DISCO

Veel zomersers dan TTRRUUCES wordt het waarschijnlijk niet in 2020. Er gebeurt zoveel in het nummer dat je bijna kunt spreken van een potpourri. Stel je voor dat Beck’s Loser een Winner was, gezongen door zijn zus en geproduceerd door Manu Chao. Zo iets.

TTRRUUCES is een duo. De vrouwelijk helft heet Natalie Findlay en is Brits. Natalie kennen we nog als de stevig rockende Findlay. Haar single Your Sister is een oude IJsbreker. Daarna werd het stil rond miss Findley. Nu weten we dus waarom. Ze heeft een partner in crime gevonden.

Hij luistert naar de schone naam Jules Appolinaire en komt uit inderdaad Frankrijk. 

De ex-IJsbreker I’m Alive staat op het onlangs verschenen debuutalbum van TTRRUUCES dat ze zelf omschrijven als een popopera over Sad Girl Sadie en Lost Boy Syd. Afgaand op I’m Alive krijgen ze elkaar aan het eind. Nu is er een opvolger; The DISCO. En de clip is net zo vrolijk en dansbaar als je zou verwachten.

Natalie en Jules hebben hun album over een periode van acht maanden opgenomen in een huis in Bretagne. Ze spelen alle instrumenten zelf en traden ook op als producer. De mix lieten ze over aan Alan Moulder die we kennen van o.a. Jesus & Mary Chain, Arctic Monkeys en Foals) en het masteren aan monsieur Chab die deed eerder deed voor o.a. Daft Punk en Christine & The Queens.

Popwarmer: Glass Animals – Heat Waves

De nieuwe Popwarmer op Pinguin Pop is ook een bekende band voor de Pinguin Indie-luisteraar. Het gaat om het catchy Heat Waves van Glass Animals, een indiepopband uit Oxford. Glass Animals uit Oxford begon een aantal jaar geleden wat psychedelischer, verwijzingen naar stadgenoten Foals waren snel gemaakt. Tegenwoordig klinkt Glass Animals wat slicker. Of gewoon lekker! Laat die Heat Wave nog maar even komen deze zomer…

METZ – A Boat To Drown In

De nieuwe Breekijzer op Pinguin On The Rocks staat op naam van METZ. Niet uit de Franse stad Metz, maar uit de Canadese hoofdstad Ottawa waar redelijk wat Frans wordt gesproken. De band resideert in Toronto, waar vooral Engels wordt gesproken. Metz ‘zingt’ ook gewoon in het Engels.

Metz is een van de vaandeldragers van de noise, punk, etc, etc. De platen van het trio komen uit op het gerenommeerde label Sub Pop. Ook nummertje vier ‘Atlas Vending’ die op 9 oktober verschijnt. A Boat To Drown (Part 1) is daarvan alvast Breekijzer.

Ghostpoet – I Grow Tired But Dare Not To Fall Asleep

Obaro Ejimiwe is een zanger, tekstdichter, muzikant en componist uit Londen. Sinds 2010 treedt hij op als Ghostpoet. Ejimiwe wordt wel geassocieerd met de snel groeiende Britse nu-jazz scene, maar is ook te horen op albums van o.a. Massive Attack, Nadine Shah en Damon Albarn’s Africa Express.

I grow tired but dare not to fall asleep is het titelnummer van zijn recent verschenen, vijfde album. Vorige producties vielen qua genre of qua sound net buiten onze boot, maar I grow tired but dare not to fall asleep willen we je niet onthouden.

De naam geeft al aan dat Ghostpoet een op tekst gerichte act is. Hij declameert dan ook meer dan hij zingt. Aan composities in de betekenis van liedjes met traditionele coupletten en refreinen doet hij niet. I grow tired, een track over de boel de boel laten, is een broeierige ‘talking blues’ met ongepolijste gitaarbegeleiding. Zijn knoestige stem heeft wel iets weg van die van Iggy Pop. Een heel album van Ghostpoet kan door zijn eenvormigheid wat te veel van het goede zijn voor de gemiddelde rockliefhebber, maar in gepaste doses valt er veel te genieten.

Jagd – Attention

Gitaarband Jagd was eerder één van de meest geboekte acts van de Popronde, stond op Noorderslag en won ook nog eens de Amsterdamse Popprijs. Ze hebben de perfecte balans gevonden tussen melodie en ritme, en dat voorzien van een fijn schurend randje. Na de single Violins is er nu de 2e track Attention. Het is een statement tegen de hedendaagse single-cultuur waarin het steeds vaker gaat om het genereren van korte aandacht wat ten koste kan gaan van inhoud en diepgang.

Mt. Atlas – Old White Man

Limburgse herriemakers Mt. Atlas begeeft zich doorgaans op de rand van fantasie en absurdisme maar op dit moment haalt de realiteit ze in. Er mag geen misverstand over bestaan dat de nieuwe single ”Old White Man” een duidelijke en transparante boodschap weergeeft; teleurstelling, woede en absoluut toe aan verandering. Het nummer scheurt, schreeuwt, zwelgt, verdelgt en vormt een mantra voor de zeitgeist. ”Old white man, your world is about to change”.

The Arthurs – Something With Oceans

The Arthurs is an alternative/indie rock band from Amsterdam/Rotterdam (The Netherlands), formed around Dutch singer/songwriter Robin den Drijver. The band distinguishes itself by its’ own unique style and sound. Listening to their melodic, dynamic, raw, beautiful, aggressive, dreamlike and always heartfelt music, will be worth your while.

 

Their debut album ‘When I’m Sane’ (2017) received positive Dutch press reviews, like the Popunie describing it as a ‘very strong debut and the perfect ticket to the biggest festivals.’ Den Drijver recorded almost all of the instruments on the album himself in his living room, accompanied by drummer Jetske Blonk.

 

Anno 2020, the lineup includes drummer Blonk, lead guitarist Dylano Hahury and bass player Martin Memelink. The band is currently recording their second album, this time as a full band, which will be released December 2020.

 

The Arthurs played notable Dutch venues and festivals and shows in Belgium and England. The band was scheduled to perform on the Bevrijdingsfestival on Dutch Liberation Day in May 2020, a big festival in The Netherlands (unfortunately cancelled because of Corona). April 2021, The Arthurs will support English legendary political new wave band Fischer-Z in De Boerderij, Zoetermeer, The Netherlands.

 

December 2019, the band released their first single and video for their second album: ‘Leave this Town’. A second one, ‘Red Letter Days’, a collaboration with Dutch actress and singer Kiki van Deursen, was released February 2020. This single received positive national (for example “Video of the Day” at Penguin Radio) and international press attention, especially from UK-based reviewers, like It’s all Indie (“The track is an absolute wonder, a real gem……it won’t be that much longer before the band goes international and captures their hearts) and Nova Blog (“Their music reflects a sense of musical completeness and expressive maturity, that has few equals”).

 

A third single, ‘Void’ was released April 2020. American blogger The Static Dive described it as “the mix of reverberated, moody vocals and high volume, melodic guitars reminds me of some of the best psychedelic and goth bands of the 80’s and 90’s. There are hints of The Church, Dinosaur Jr and Bauhaus. But The Arthurs definitely put their own spin on the sound. In the end, their brand of hypnotic Rock is all their own.”

 

July 17th 2020, The Arthurs released a fourth single and music video: “Something with Oceans”.

 

The Arthurs show their ambition with a strong live performance, like the Dutch Jitters Blog mentioned in their Westerpop Festival review, calling them ‘a unique indie rock band, different from others, that grabbed our attention to the stage immediately’ and is often predicted a great future.
