Spinvis – De dag dat Richard Krajicek Wimbledon won

Op de dag dat Richard Krajicek Wimbledon won speelde Spinvis onder de Dom in Utrecht. We hebben het over 7 juli 1996.

Wat er die dag nog meer gebeurde, vond z’n weerslag in het lied De dag dat Richard Krajicek Wimbledon won dat op de kop af 24 jaar later verschijnt als voorbode van het nieuwe Spinvis-album, zijn vijfde meesterwerk op rij dat na de zomer verschijnt.

In de jaren na de winst van Krajicek op Wimbledon ontpopte Spinvis zich tot een iconische artiest. Hij maakte stukken voor orkesten, moderne dansgroepen, tv-series, koren en films. Met ‘Krajicek’ doet Spinvis weer waar hij het beste in is: het produceren van unieke popsongs, liederen die in hun uniciteit een genre an sich vormen en hem tot een van de meest geliefde artiesten in de lage landen maakten.

Tom Morello x Shea Diamond x Dan Reynolds x The Bloody Beetroots – Stand Up

Gitarist Tom Morello van Rage Against The Machine en Audioslave heeft van zich laten horen in het racismedebat. Morello is niet vies van een protestsong en een sterke mening, dus het verbaasde ons al dat hij niet eerder op de barricade stond.

Zo’n twee weken geleden kwam Stand Up uit. Tom Morello zou dit jaar op reünietour gaan met RATM, maar ja, dat ging dus niet door door de coronacrisis. Tijd voor deze single dus. Een stevige rocktrack met puntige elektro door de samenwerking met The Bloody Beetroots.

Nog meer ft.’s, Dan Reynolds is de voorman van Imagine Dragons en Shea Diamond een bekende activiste. Samen en met de fans zeggen zij STAND UP! En die boodschap komt hard binnen.

Chloe x Halle – Do It

Misschien heeft Chloe x Halle nog wat introductie nodig, ondanks dat ze vooral in de VS al groot succes hebben. Zusjes Chloe en Halle Bailey scoren deze week de Popwarmer op Pinguin Pop met hun hit Do It. Ze begonnen als actrices maar zijn gaan zingen op YouTube. Door een cover van Beyoncé heeft Queen B herself ze twee jaar geleden een contract aangeboden.

In juni verscheen het tweede album Ungodly Hour, een sterk staaltje moderne R&B maar met een sfeer van het genre in de 90’s. Het prijsnummer is Do It, dat al lekker viral ging op apps als TikTok.

beabadoobee – Care

beabadoobee is geen onbekende meer. De inmiddels 20-jarige Londense Bea Kristi van Filipijnse afkomst scoorde hoge ogen binnen Pinguinkringen met hits als She Plays Bass en Space Cadet, maar ook daar buiten. Ze valt niet alleen op door haar hippe geverfde haar, maar ook daar haar muzikale talent. Rapper Powfu en producer No Rome (ook met roots in de Filipijnen) hebben haar gestrikt voor een bijdrage.

En er komt een album, op 10 augustus, haar debuut. Afgaande op de nieuwe single Care wordt dat geen slappe hap en geen mainstream. Care rockt behoorlijk zoals ook de alternative koninginnen dat konden in de jaren ’90, waar ze duidelijk de mosterd vandaan haalt. De slaapkamer/fluisterpop waarmee beabadoobee twee jaar geleden doorbrak is definitief onderin de kledingkast gedumpt. Ze is een nieuw tieneridool in de lijn van Billie Eilish en The 1975, maar met de gitaarsound waar wij blij van worden.

Washed Out – Time to Walk Away

Washed Out is Atlanta-based producer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Ernest Greene. Voor dit 4e album is Ernest terug bij de Sub Pop familie. Purple Noon is geschreven, opgenomen en geproduceerd door Greene zelf, de mixen zijn verzorgd door frequent samenwerkingspartner Ben H. Allen (Paracosm, Within and Without). Op de productie van het album volgde een korte periode van schrijven voor andere artiesten (met name met Sudan Archives op haar debuut Athena), waardoor Greene voor het eerst genres als R & B en moderne pop kon verkennen. Deze helderdere, robuustere geluiden vonden hun weg naar de nummers van Purple Noon en markeren een nieuw hoofdstuk in de groei van Greene, zowel als producer als songwriter.

De kusten van de Middellandse Zee inspireren Purple Noon en Greene was al maanden aan het plannen een videoclip voor de single Too Late op te nemen. “My inspiration was a Mediterranean sunset I saw late last year, and the plan was to shoot on the coast of Italy with a team of UK and European collaborators. As we got closer to the shoot date, word about the severity and the speed of the virus started becoming daily news, and it became clear it wasn’t going to happen the way we’d planned. We tried to move the shoot several times (to Malta, Croatia, Spain, and eventually the UK), and one after another, countries shut their borders. Seeing Italy hit so hard was especially difficult to see.

I put up an IG post asking for fans to help me come up with the raw footage I had in mind – those first few days, as I was going through photos of my trips and tours, the memories of traveling and experiences I’d had took on a new significance. I wanted the video to capture those same moments for other people in their lives, and give us all an excuse to remember what it’ll look like again when it passes.

 

I went in thinking if I got 100 clips, I’d have enough to make the video I wanted to make. 30 minutes in, I had the 100 clips, and a few days in, I had over 1,200 clips – from London, Bali, Okinawa, Ann Arbor, Dubrovnik and a few hundred other places around the world. It was pretty amazing for me to see the vids and pics flood in like they did.”

Nana Adjoa releases new single “No Room” and announces debut album

Nana Adjoa releases her latest single, “No Room.” The track finds Nana considering the empty space that often fills vacant conversation, stating that the track is about, “Talking; talking too much about nothing. Just filling the room or the conversation with fillers. Creating a false sense of security and control of the moment, while simultaneously killing it. Leaving nothing to discover, no room to get to really know someone or experience something new.” 

 

“No Room” is joined by a compelling visual that traces the cacophony of noise one may feel inside the head as a result of continuous external opinions, judgements, or hollow conversations. Moreover, the video is a graceful nod to Nana’s Ghanaian heritage. Creative Director Rudy Asibey says that, “The vision was to bring Nana’s duality in culture and music together. Her name stands for so much more in Ghanaian culture. Nana means king/queen and Adjoa is her day name (‘Monday’), which stands for peacemaker. For me, Nana’s music is a journey to finding the answers to life. Nana guides us with music to help us find those answers. I wanted to bring that journey to life in the visuals. In this video, we see more of her Ghanaian culture and a journey to finding self—even though people want to put you in a box or want you to become someone else. In the end, she chooses herself. As Nana’s name represents, I hope her music guides people to choose for themselves, to learn more about their heritage in order to gain learnings from heritage and grow. Especially in these times, it is important to know where you’re from, in order to know where you’re going. We could all use a peacemaker.” The visual delivery was furthermore amplified by Video Director Robbert Doelwijt Jr., who noted, “I relate to Nana’s message about small talk not providing us with enough room for imagination. So it was fun translating that into this video that almost feels like one continues sequence, because of the wipe transitions and match cuts. At the end of the day I wanted the video to show Nana on her way to find room to be creative, despite the things holding her back.”

 

“No Room” furthermore marks the announcement of Nana’s debut album, Big Dreaming Ants, set for a September 24th release. The timing of Big Dreaming Ants feels auspicious. As the world seemingly unfolds around us, Nana quietly ponders identity, questioning authority, online provocation and digital clashes, and the meaning (and inherent tension) of national identity or pride. 

 

The track follows a warm reception to previous singles “She’s Stronger,” which was released on Future Classic’s Wilder imprint, and “Throw Stones.” “She’s Stronger” was selected to be KCRW’s “Today’s Top Tune” and received positive reviews from the likes of Cat Power, Toro y Moi, and Vulfpeck. With regards to “Throw Stones,” C-Heads Magazine proclaimed that, “everything about this track is simply magic,” whilst The Voice Newspaper wrote: “Producing a sound that is rich in tonal textures and is as intimate as it is expansive…this young lady is set to be your new favourite artist you didn’t know about.”
