Pinguin Radio presenteert de Vinyl33 – Week 9 / 2020

Record Store Day Nederland, met de onafhankelijke platenzaak als middelpunt, breidt haar activiteiten met de Vinyl33, verder uit.

Op Pinguin Radio draaien we elke week zo veel mogelijk nieuwe releases, de hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer, de klimmer van de week en uiteraard veel tracks uit de top 10.

Arlo Parks – Eugene

Arlo Parks’ releases official video for ‘Eugene’ – directed by Loyle Carner

Loyle Carner and Arlo Parks first met at Latitude festival 2019. Since then Loyle asked Arlo to support him on his UK tour last Autumn, including London’s Alexandra Palace.

 

After a growing friendship and a mutual appreciation of each others’ music and art, The Coyle Larner brothers (Loyle Carner and his brother Ryan) chose Arlo for their directional debut – directing  the music video for Arlo’s new single ‘Eugene’.

My Ugly Clementine brengt nieuwe single Who uit

My Ugly Clementine is een dames viertal dat het stof van de gitaren heeft gehaald en de 90’s grunge-vibe nieuw leven inblaast en dat combineert met aanstekelijke indie en flarden uit de post-punk revival.

In eigen land zijn ze een zogeheten ‘supergroep’, want de meiden maken deel uit van relevante Oostenrijkse bands. In het buitenland zijn ze ‘gewoon’ een fijne verrassing, zoals velen ook tijdens afgelopen Eurosonic concludeerden.

Op Vitamin C laten ze een krachtige en serieuze boodschap horen, maar die wordt altijd met een knipoog en een lach gebracht, en verpakt in pakkende liedjes en fraaie samenzang.

De lead single in aanloop naar de album release is Who.

Seasick Steve verspreidt liefde & vrede

Op ‘Love & Peace’ mengt Steve al zijn geliefde ingrediënten en levert hij een fris, nieuw album af. Het biedt een perfect tegengif tegen de moeilijke tijden waarin we vandaag leven. Het album zit vol hoop voor de toekomst en is een schitterende mix van boogie, blues, rock, americana en folk. Uitgevoerd in de unieke stijl van Seasick Steve. Pre-save het album hier.

“In these crazy times seems to me there just ain’t enough love and peace to go around,” zegt Steve. “I ain’t exactly sure what this here record got to do with love and peace, but I figured I’d call it that anyways!”

Met dit album, geschreven en geproduceerd door Seasick Steve, breekt hij een belangrijke traditie. Hoewel er het één en ander is opgenomen in een schuur, werd het overgrote deel van de opnames gemaakt in Studio 606 van East West Studio 3 in Los Angeles. Het album werd gemixt door Vance Powell (die eerder werkte met Jack White en Chris Stapleton) en Steve zelf. De vertrouwde drummer van Steve, Dan Magnusson (a.k.a. Crazy Dan), speelt wederom op het album, tezamen met gitarist Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars) en mondharmonica speler Malcolm Arison (The BossHoss).

Steve voegt daaraan toe; “This was recorded on 2” analogue tape, mixed to analogue tape and for the vinyl it was cut from the 1/2” master tape direct to lathe. ‘Old skool’, no computer, hear what I’m sayin’? I hope you like it ok. Adios amigos!”

Later deze maand begint de Europese tour van Seasick Steve, waarbij hij Nederland uiteraard niet overslaat. Zo staat hij op 3 april in een uitverkochte Paradiso in Amsterdam en speelt hij op 12 juli op Bospop in Weert.

Tickets voor Matthews Southern Comfort op 26 maart in Grenswerk

‘Matthews Southern Comfort’ is eigenlijk de naam van Iain Matthews’ eerste soloalbum, destijds geholpen door leden van Fairport Convention. Dit project zou daarna uitgroeien tot band. Hoewel steeds wisselend van samenstelling weet Iain zich steeds met topmusici te omringen, waarbij de hand van de meester onmiskenbaar blijft. In februari 2020 komt de band met een nieuw album genaamd ‘The New Mine.’ Het vele touren in de afgelopen twee jaar heeft een sterke samenhang en strakheid in de band gecreëerd die terug te horen is op dit nieuwe album. Op donderdag 26 maart komt de band het resultaat live laten horen in Venlo!

BLUES PILLS – Proud Woman

Often compared to a jam session between Aretha Franklin and LED ZEPPELIN, BLUES PILLS’ career took them from an American garage to international glory within a few years. Their self titled debut album (2014) entered the German album charts at #4 and two years later they went straight to #1 with the successor “Lady in Gold”. Starting in the smallest clubs the band suddenly found themselves playing on some of the world’s biggest stages from Rock Am Ring, Download, Sweden Rock and even the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival where DEEP PURPLE famously saw smoke on the water during Frank Zappa’s performance.

With the band’s 3rd album, ‘Holy Moly!’, to be released on June 19th, 2020, BLUES PILLS plan their return to a number of major festival stages, playing Download, Hurricane and Southside among many others throughout the summer.

But fans need not wait until summer for their first taste of the action. To support International Women’s Day on March 8th BLUES PILLS have released their first single ‘Proud Woman’. The band describe their intentions with the song:
“With ‘Proud Woman’ we wanna give the fierce women and grrrls of the world a power anthem to turn on whenever they wanna feel empowered. Or just have fun. A song to everyone who stands behind the most obvious things of all. Equality and unity. Whoever you are, wherever you come from. Women will always be a driving force of change. And a change is gonna come.”

In regards to the lyrics of ‘Proud Woman’ vocalist, Elin Larsson, says: “I’m a proud woman came out from my inner self and the first thing I thought was: someone must have written this before. And if not, why? Hey! It’s about damn time then!

To be a woman or non-binary in the music industry seems to be more about the gender then the music sometimes. As a woman you’re being belittled, threatened, scrutinized, made fun of, targeted and harassed in a way that the men in the industry isn’t. And even so there is so many women in the industry who made and are making their mark just as mighty as the men, and they do that despite all of the hardships they get for simply being a woman and that makes their triumphs even greater.”

Bluestown Music is een gloednieuwe website voor de liefhebber van alle soorten blues; modern en oud – maar ook met rock, roots en americana.

En daar houden pinguïns wel van. Daarom vanaf nu elke dinsdagavond van 23:00 tot 00:00 uur een uurtje Bluestown Music Radio op Pinguin Radio. Het uur wordt samengesteld door Mr. Blues Himself, Harry Radstake. Oprichter en coördinator van bluestownmusic.nl.

Pinguin Radio presenteert om 22:00 uur Heaven Radio #207

heavenPinguin Radio en Popmagazine Heaven delen twee belangrijke eigenschappen: een passie voor goede muziek en een volstrekt onafhankelijke opstelling. Dat moest natuurlijk tot een samenwerking leiden

Heaven verzorgt iedere dinsdagavond van 22:00 tot 23:00 een uur lang de muziek op Pinguin Radio. Net als Pinguin heeft Heaven oor voor – bijna – alle popmuziek. In het uurtje radio hoor je muziek uit verschillende genres: (classic)rock, roots, folk, soul, world, jazz en blues.

En weer een nieuwe Heaven!
