Breekijzer: Royal Blood

De nieuwe Breekijzer op Pinguin On The Rocks is Hook, Line & Sinker van Royal Blood. 2017 wordt het jaar van de waarheid voor Royal Blood. Het duo moet bewijzen echt van koninklijke bloede te zijn en geen eendagsvlieg. Het plotselinge succes van Mike Kerr en Ben Thatcher met hun debuutalbum is namelijk helemaal niet zo vanzelfsprekend. Het duo brak door met een stijl, die vrij ver verwijderd is van de mainstream. Het is ook niet zo dat de doorbraak van Royal Blood de sluizen opende voor soortgelijke bands. Het aantal rockduo’s is zeker gestegen, maar de gitaar heeft het nog steeds zwaar. Royal Blood heeft twee hindernissen te nemen, die van het moeilijke tweede album en de mannen moet bewijzen over een lange adem te beschikken. Lights Out, de eerste single van het nieuwe album, How Did We Get So Dark laat horen dat de band doorgaat op de ingeslagen weg, maar dat ze wat sound betreft wel enige concessies richting radio hebben gedaan. Dat die opzet is geslaagd, blijkt wel uit het feit dat 3FM Lights Out tot Megahit heeft uitgeroepen. De kans dat dat met Hook, Line & Sinker ook gaat gebeuren is een stuk kleiner. Single #2 van het nieuwe album is een paar tandjes heavier en een stuk opwindender. Is Lights Out gemaakt met de radio in het hoofd, Hook, Line & Sinker is een voor de festivals. Het tweesporenbeleid van Royal Blood lijkt te werken, want tot nu toe is everybody happy, de hitkids en het bier en zweetpubliek.

DauwpopMeer dan 40 acts vullen het programma op vijf podia: Jupiler Mainstage, The Barn (hosted by Pinguin Radio), King King, XITE Party Pit en (Down) The Glory Hole. Het programma begint om 12.00 uur in de XITE Party Pit en op 12.15 uur in de King King. Op Jupiler Mainstage en in The Barn begint het programma om 12.30 uur.

Chef’Special sluit het programma af op Jupiler Mainstage, Monster Magnet sluit The Barn af en De Likt de King King. Dj De Rooie Jager gaat (Down) The Glory Hole afsluiten en Moksi draait de laatste spot in de XITE Party Pit.

London CallingHet popfestival London Calling, dat twee keer per jaar plaatsvindt in Paradiso, begon in 1992 als showcasefestival voor de nieuwste beloftes uit Groot-Brittannië.
Tegenwoordig biedt London Calling aan nieuwe, spraakmakende alternatieve bands uit het de hele wereld een podium, als springplank naar clubs en festivals.
Op het festival hebben al heel wat namen gestaan die later doorbraken bij het grote publiek, zoals: Foster The People, Florence and the Machine, Bombay Bicycle Club, Friendly Fires, The XX, Blur, The Kooks, Editors, Bloc Party en The Libertines.

De volgende London Calling in Paradiso is op vrijdag 26 en zaterdag 27 mei 2017.

Zondagavond 21 mei van 22:00 tot 00:00 uur is het hoogtijd om de oren te poetsen en in de stemming te komen voor Buma ROCKS! Frank Helmink en en Peter van der Laan hosten het programma Buma ROCKS Radio waarin ze vooruitblikken op de conferentie Buma ROCKS! tijdens FortaRock In The City, het metalfestival op zaterdag 27 mei in Doornroosje, Nijmegen. Deze metal-special hoor je zowel op Pinguin Radio als op Aardschok. Hieronder lees je nog meer info over Buma ROCKS!

Buma RocksIn its fifth year of existence, Buma ROCKS! will be present during festival FortaRock In The City on Saturday 27 May in Doornroosje in Nijmegen.

Buma ROCKS!, the international conference and showcase festival for loud music, aims to connect ambitious and upcoming acts in hard rock, metal and related genres to professionals from the rock business both from the Netherlands and abroad.

This year during FortaRock In The City Buma ROCKS! will offer Heavy Chats, a matchmaking programme between artists and a number of hot shots from the heavy music business invited to FortaRock In The City. They will check out the Dutch bands playing and they are available for matchmaking sessions to share some of their wisdom and exchange ideas.

Buma ROCKS! will be presenting four bands during the festival.

The Charm The Fury from Amsterdam was the first one to be confirmed. The modern metal band played at the very first Buma ROCKS! event in 2013 and took part in the Buma ROCKS! presents LOUD & PROUD showcase event during Eurosonic Noorderslag in January of 2016. Subsequently Buma ROCKS! offered the band a showcase spot at the Global Rock Summit in Los Angeles. They didn’t go unnoticed: the five-piece featuring vocalist Caroline Westendorp were picked up in LA by label Nuclear Blast, operating from both Germany and the USA. At the end of March 2017 the second The Charm The Fury album entitled The Sick, Dumb & Happy was released through Nuclear Blast/Arising Empire. DOOL from Rotterdam were the very first act to apply for a showcase gig when registration on the Buma ROCKS!website opened in January. With their three-guitar attack, the Rotterdam-based band fronted by Ryanne van Dorst already played impressive gigs at selected festivals in 2016 and 2017. The melodic songs on their debut album Here Now, There Then (released in February 2017) offer a mix of dark rock, gothic pop, gloomy psychedelic rock and metal. Website here.

Pelgrim from Tilburg combine the heavy vocals and pounding rhythms of djent and metalcore with the technicality and creativity of the progressive scene, resulting in a refreshing sound of their own. With an outstanding and energetic live performance, Pelgrim offer a challenging musical approach based on great songs that can be enjoyed by a broad audience. Pelgrim’s music has a wide scope, making it enjoyable for almost every metal fan. Their first EP-release from 2013 received lots of positive feedback. Their first full-length called Ephemera was released in February of 2016. Pelgrim are currently working on new songs. Bandcamp here.

Ulsect too are from Tilburg. The death metal innovators feature guitarist Joris Bonis and drummer Jasper Barendregt from Dodecahedron as well as former Textures bassist Dennis Aarts. It therefore hardly comes as a surprise that elements of their origins have permeated into Ulsect’s self-titled debut album, to be released on label Season Of Mist in May 2017.
