Caroline Rose bracht in februari haar nieuwe album Loner uit via New West Records. Loner werd samen met Paul Butler (Devendra Banhart, Michael Kiwanuka, Hurray For The Riff Raff) geproduceerd. De nieuwe video voor de single Bikini is nu uit.
Een geldobsessie, een ontrouwe liefde, een vriendin die persongeluk zwanger werd, vrouwenhaat, eenzaamheid, de dood, het zijn enkele ‘luchtige’ thema’s die op het album Loner voorbij komen. Caroline Rose bespreekt met haar donkere humor heftige onderwerpen op haar tweede studioalbum. Of zoals Rose zelf zegt: “Sometimes sad songs just need a cocktail.”
Loner is een combinatie van catchy synth hooks, surf gitaar, diepe gedachte en een beetje punk. Rose vond het belangrijk veel zelf te produceren aangezien ze veel instrumenten speelt, maar ook omdat er te weinig vrouwen produceren. “I noticed over the course of all these [music industry] meetings there was not a single female or nonbinary producer. Then the more I read up on why, the more I realized there actually are a lot of us, we just aren’t taken as seriously and either don’t receive or don’t demand the credit that we deserve.” – aldus Rose.
De nieuwe single afkomstig van Loner is Bikini. Caroline Rose verteld hierover: “A lot of my aesthetic tends to be very tongue-in-cheek, so I wanted to take a serious subject, in this case misogyny, and just sort of turn it around to laugh at it. I think satire can be used as an incredible tool to take the power away from the powerful when necessary. It was important to me to make sure the video was body positive. When we think of ‘girls in bikinis,’ the tendency is to see tall white models with perfect bodies. I knew that would be missing the point of the song.”
