We recorded this track live to tape with our great friend Levi Vis from the Dawn Brothers on bass, on the same day as Swain. We spent most of the day recording Swain and we had only 30 minutes left before Levi had to leave. We thought fuck it, let’s just do a runthrough of the song, soundcheck, and then do one take really quickly. We recorded the runthrough, the very first time we played this song together, listened back to it and we loved it. It’s full of spontaneous little things, some flaws, but the energy was just really good. We did another take but the first one, the runthrough, was just right in all its spontaneousness and that’s the one that got on the album!
Pablo came up with this riff and we instantly got this Undercover of the Night vibe, disco meets rock n roll, so we played around with that and then Luka just started singing random stuff; “Wake up mama, your man is a trucker”. It was the first thing that he came up with so we went for that until we’d come up with something better, because we thought it was a ridiculous line. But we just couldn’t get it out of our heads, so eventually we embraced it and built the whole song around this mean truck-drivin, cheatin son of a sawed-off mother of a gun that is the Double Crossin Man.
The weird sounding high pitched ‘swooosh’ at the very end of the song is the sound of the tape recorder coming to a halt abruptly while Pablo & Luka were screaming the last word, “maaaaaan”. Some transistor in the tape recorded overheated, burned and then all the power went out. We had to fix the tape recorder before we could hear back the tape!”
