Pavlove

Pavlove – Anything but Cupid

Pavlove is an indie rock/psychedelic pop band from Belgium with Iranian roots.

The danceable indie rock/psychedelic pop song was mixed by Jorge Elbrecht (Ariel Pink, Wild Nothing, Japanese Breakfast, …) in the US. They made the video together with a young, talented crew (of friends) and the result is a contemporary, contrasting music video. Including a beautiful dance sequence.

The song’s about alienation, miscommunication and desperation. We know when we fall in love, but when do we fall out of it? There’s no black or white answer. It also begs the question whether or not love is self-defeating. When do we become a slave of it? Perhaps love resembles Cupid’s bow-and-arrow: the more you desperately try to pull someone towards you, the bigger the distance.

For the video they used symbolism to portray these emotions. It shows the relationship between a guy and his real doll. She’s a symbol for alienation, the lack of dialogue and being stuck. He’s not your stereotype real doll lover, but a stereotype portrayal of ‘masculinity’. Which breaks down as we follow their day in the life. The result is a haunting story that takes the viewer on an emotional rollercoaster. They didn’t want to make a typical happy-go-lucky indie video, and that’s what makes it so interesting. The arthouse look makes the emotional trip easier on the eye too.
