De half-Tanzaniaanse, half Britse ster-in-wording Ady Suleiman kwam onder de aandacht toen hij werd geselecteerd als ‘Breakthrough Act of the Year’ voor Gilles Petersons Worldwide Awards.
Hierdoor mocht hij de support verzorgen van artiesten als Michael Kiwanuka, Laura Mvula, Leon Bridges en Lianne Le Havas. Suleiman heeft een sound ontwikkeld die zowel klassiek als fris klinkt en die hem al complimenten opleverde van Chance the Rapper, George the Poet en Michael Kiwanuka. Joey Bada$$ zei over hem: “His voice is something else. It’s amazing.”
Na een aantal EP’s, die hem de nodige aandacht van de BBC opleverde, is Ady nu zijn debuutalbum aan het opnemen dat begin 2018 gaat verschijnen. Hierop vooruitlopend verschijnt nu de single Not Giving Up, een track over verslaving, mentale problemen, het opgroeien in een kleine stad, de liefde en jong zijn.
Suleiman zegt er het volgende over: ‘The video is about loving someone who is spiralling into a very negative place and the more time you spend with them, the more likely you are to be involved in that. So you want some space. It’s not easy to leave because you love this person and deep down you know they dont want to live the way they are living, but they don’t seem to have the strength to stop. You have tried to give them strength but you don’t know if bailing them out is helping the situation or making it worse for them in the long term, but you know it is starting to have a very negative impact on you so you have to pull yourself away.”
