SLASH ft. Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators op 24 februari naar AFAS Live

Op zondag 24 februari komt SLASH ft. Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators naar Amsterdam voor een show in AFAS Live. De show is onderdeel van de Living The Dream Tour die in het teken staat van het nieuw te verschijnen gelijknamige album. De kaartverkoop voor de show in Amsterdam start maandag 17 september om 10:00 uur via Ticketmaster.

SLASHSLASH ft. Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators brengen op 21 september hun nieuwe album Living The Dream uit via SLASH zijn eigen label Snakepit Records in samenwerking met Roadrunner Records. Voor Living The Dream hebben SLASH en zijn band opnieuw samengewerkt met producer Michael ‘Elvis’ Baskette die eerder ook werkte met Alter Bridge, Iggy Pop en Incubus.
De eerste single van het album Driving Rain verscheen al eerder. Living The Dream is het vierde solo album van SLASH en het derde samen met Myles Kennedy (zang), Brent Fitz (drums), Todd Kerns (bas & zang) en Frank Sidoris (gitaar & zang). De Living The Dream Tour start deze maand in Amerika en komt in februari naar Europa.

Seal en Al McKay’s Earth, Wind & Fire Experience naar Night of the Proms 2018

Britse soulzanger Seal en Al McKay’s Earth, Wind & Fire Experience maken het programma van Night of the Proms 2018 compleet. Zij delen op zaterdag 17 november het podium in Rotterdam Ahoy met Suzanne Vega, Milow, gitarist Petrit Ceku en John Miles. De kaartverkoop van Night of the Proms is reeds begonnen via Ticketmaster.

Seal begint zijn carrière in de jaren negentig als zanger in de Engelse housescene. Samen met Adamski scoort hij dan een grote hit met Killer. Vanaf dat moment gaat het snel en haalt Seal de eerste plaats in de Nederlandse hitlijsten met zijn single Crazy. De singles Future Love Paradise, The Beginning en Kiss From A Rose belanden in de top 10. Seal verkoopt meer dan 30 miljoen albums wereldwijd en ontvangt tientallen prijzen, waaronder drie Brit Awards en vier Grammy’s.

Na het uiteenvallen van Earth Wind & Fire eind 1983, vormde Earth Wind & Fire-gitarist Al McKay in 1990, samen met enkele andere voormalige groepsleden, de “LA Allstars”. De band wijzigde zijn naam nadien naar “Al McKay´s Earth, Wind & Fire Experience” en brengt het originele geluid van de disco-en soulmuziek. O.a. Boogie Wonderland, Let’s groove en September (meer dan 347 miljoen streams op Spotify) werden wereldsuccessen. Enkele jaren geleden werd Boogie Wonderland nog prominent gebruikt in de Franse film ‘Intouchables’.  Al McKay houdt de legende die Earth, Wind & Fire is tijdens zijn optredens springlevend en trakteert het publiek op een mix van soul, funk, jazz- en discomuziek en combineert deze stijlen tot een eigen sound.

De klassieke artiest dit jaar is Petrit Ceku, een 33-jarige klassieke gitarist uit Kosovo. Hij veroverde wereldwijd een publiek als solist bij grote symfonische orkesten zoals o.a. het State Hermitage Orkest van St. Petersburg. Hij won verschillende internationale gitaarcompetities waaronder Parkening en Schadt in de VS en Biasini en Pittaluga in Italië.

Concertfilm & Lezing: Prince – Lovesexy op 9 september in De Vorstin

Op 9 september 1988 ging vanuit de Westfalenhalle in Dortmund de live-registratie van Prince baanbrekende Lovesexy tournee per satelliet de wereld over. Precies 30 jaar later, op 9 september 2018, vertonen PrinceVault.com en de Vorstin samen de legendarische film in de grote zaal.

Let op: de tijden zijn vervroegd, deuren gaan om 19:00 open en het begint om 19:30!

PrinceVault Live: Lovesexy at 30
Op 9 september 1988 ging vanuit de Westfalenhalle in Dortmund de live-registratie van Prince baanbrekende Lovesexy tournee per satelliet de wereld over. Een show met een Nederlands tintje, daar het door een Nederlandse crew werd gefilmd en vooral omdat Prince expliciet om Nederlands publiek in de Duitse concertzaal had gevraagd. De Vorstin staat stil bij dit bijzondere stuk muziekgeschiedenis, door exact 30 jaar later de legendarische concertregistratie op een groot doek te vertonen.

Voorafgaand nemen Prince-kenners Edgar Kruize (auteur van het boek Prince: The Dutch Experience) en JooZt Mattheij (hoofdredacteur van online Prince-bijbel PrinceVault.com) je mee achter de schermen. Ze staan, begeleid door zeldzaam beeld, geluid en een speciale gast, uitgebreid stil bij de totstandkoming van het Lovesexy-album en de iconische tournee.

Primeur: Therapy? met nieuwe single & video Wreck It Like Beckett

Therapy?Zojuist heeft het Noord-Ierse rocktrio Therapy? de nieuwe single & video Wreck It Like Beckett online gezet, de opvolger van de eerste single-video Callow die in mei van dit jaar uitkwam.

Beide nummers staan op het nieuwe (15e) studio-album Cleave dat op 21 september via Marshall Records-ADA/Warner wordt uitgebracht. Het door oudgediende Chris Sheldon geproduceerde Cleave is de opvolger van Disquiet uit 2013.

Wreck It Like Beckett was produced and mixed by long-time collaborator Chris Sheldon (who worked with the band on Troublegum, Semi-Detached and High Anxiety) at Blast Studios in Newcastle and mastered by Christian Wright at Abbey Road Studios.

Frontman Andy Cairns, huge fan of Beckett: “This song originated with our bass player Michael. He told me he had a riff which reminded him of ‘She Watch Channel Zero’ by Public Enemy and he sent me over a bass riff, a guitar riff and a drum beat. I thought the riff was incredible, and so we chopped it up in the rehearsal room, to make it more stop-start, like [classic Therapy? tracks] Knives or Screamager, and that really worked.

Lyrically, it’s about trying to start anew. The reason that [Irish playwright and poet] Samuel Beckett is referenced in the title is that each time Beckett began a new project he used to imagine that he was sitting at a desk and could swipe his arm across the desk to clear away all the sheets of paper so that he could make a fresh start. This is a song that sets the album up as a new chapter for Therapy?.”

Clipprimeur: SUiT presenteert tweede single Kings & Queens

SUiTSUiT brengt vandaag in Europe de tweede single van haar debuutplaat The Girl, The God, The Rush uit.

Kings & Queens kwam in juli al in Rusland uit waar de band ruim een maand verbleef voor de opnames van de volgende plaat en een grote tournee. De band legde daar ruim 4000 km tussen Moskou en Novosibirsk af met de Trans-Siberië express en speelde op meerdere grote zomerfestivals.

Deze herfst speelt SUiT nog een aantal keer in Berlijn, voordat de heren terug naar Rusland gaan om hun plaat af te ronden. Enjoy Kings & Queens.

R.E.M. at the BBC – Rare Studio & Live Recordings Spanning Nearly 25 Years

R.E.M.R.E.M. grew up with the BBC, and this historic relationship is lovingly celebrated across an incredible collection that beautifully illustrates the career trajectory of one of modern music’s greatest bands. The collection—available as a super-deluxe edition 8-CD/1-DVD box set, as well as 2-CD, 2-LP and digital formats – comprises a treasure trove of rare and unreleased live and studio recordings culled from the BBC and band archives. This is a must-have collection for R.E.M. fans and an authoritative introduction for newcomers.

In-studio performances featured in the 8-CD/1-DVD box set include a John Peel Session (1998), Drivetime and Mark and Lard appearances (2003) and a glorious Radio 1 Live Lounge performance (2008). Live broadcasts include a rough-and-tumble show from Nottingham’s Rock City (1984), the stunning 1995 Milton Keynes Monster Tour (their first after a six-year break), a blistering 1999 Glastonbury headline set and an invitation-only 2004 show at London’s St James’s Church.

The DVD kicks off with a sixty-minute intimate retrospective of the band’s legendary performances at the BBC in the Accelerating Backwards film – previously broadcast only in the UK and available commercially for the first time here.  Accelerating Backwards also includes revealing interviews with Peter Buck, Mike Mills and Michael Stipe, further testifying to R.E.M.’s long, special relationship with the BBC.  The DVD also offers a complete 1998 Later….With Jools Holland episode uniquely dedicated to the band, plus TV appearances on Top of the Pops and more.

The package liner notes add yet more behind-the-scenes insight to this definitive retrospective collection. Assorted BBC personalities reminiscence about what it was like to work with R.E.M both on stage and off. Respected BBC DJ/Presenter Jo Whiley recalls, “Their Glastonbury performance in 1999 was a dazzling moment: the band storming through an all-killer, no-filler setlist. As a headline performance, it was a triumph and, for me, it’s up there as one of the Glastonbury greats.”  Of a 2001 Top of the Pops performance, BBC Producer Mark Hagen muses, “”Michael once told me that he hears in colors and it was one of those nights when you felt that you could reach out and touch the music as it flowed through the air, a glorious rolling cloud of green. Just like a kudzu vine in a dream.”  Acclaimed rock journalist Tom Doyle also provides an overview of the entire period.

In addition to the comprehensive box set, The Best of R.E.M. at the BBC is also available via 2-CD and 2-LP formats. The Best of collection offers a selection of in-studio performance and live broadcast highlights. Behind Prison Walls Festival op 22 september in Leeuwarden

In 1968 gaf Johnny Cash een optreden voor de gevangenen van Folsom State Prison. Het live-album At Folsom Prison is nog steeds een van zijn bekendste albums ooit.

Om het 50-jarig jubileum te vieren gaat Def Americans Johnny Cash Tribute op 22 september ook de gevangenis in tijdens BEHIND PRISON WALLS. In een van de oudste gevangenissen van Nederland, Blokhuispoort Bhp in Leeuwarden, gaat de band het legendarische At Folsom Prison in zijn geheel vertolken.

Op de line-up staan naast de Def Americans ook nog Black Bottle Riot, Blue Grass Boogiemen, Mattanja Joy Bradley, Reverse Cowgirls en The Sensational Second Cousins.

Soul-, funk- en gospelzangeres Leela James naar Paard en Paradiso

Leela James is een Amerikaanse soulzangeres uit Los Angeles die artiesten zoals James Brown, Roberta Flack en Gladys Knight als haar grootste inspiratiebronnen ziet. De diepte en kracht in haar stem doen je dan ook gelijk denken aan befaamde zangeressen uit de jaren ’60 en ’70.

In 2004 tourde Leela James mee als openingsact voor The Black Eyed Peas en Macy Gray. In datzelfde jaar was ze te horen op het album Soul Survivor II van dj, producer en hiphoplegende Pete Rock.

Haar debuutalbum A Change Is Gonna Come kwam uit in 2005 en daarop is goed te horen wat de stijl van Leela James inhoudt – een boeiende mengeling van funk, R&B en gospelmuziek. Het album betekende het startschot voor haar carrière, mede door de grote namen die ze hiervoor wist te strikken. Raphael Saadiq, Kanye West en Wyclef Jean leverden allen een gastbijdrage. Daarna volgden er al gauw meerdere albums, wat eraan bijdroeg dat Leela James tot op de dag van vandaag als één van de meest toonaangevende soulzangeressen geldt.
