NewDad, Wet Leg en meer bevestigd voor London Calling

De line-up van London Calling op 29 en 30 oktober wordt alsmaar mooier, al zeggen we het zelf. Nieuw op het programma zijn: Talk Show, Wet Leg, NewDad en Molly Payton. Wel brengt deze aankondiging helaas ook een afzegging met zich mee: Girlhouse gaat het niet redden om het festival bij te wonen in oktober. Mocht jij er nou wél bij kunnen zijn: haal dan je passe-partout via onze website. Die kun je maar alvast in huis hebben.

Ook te zien op ons festival: Chubby & The Gang, Peeping Drexels, The Ninth Wave, Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard, Tiña en nog veel meer. Luister naar onze Spotify-playlist om een indruk te krijgen.

Wet Leg, wat een aanwinst. Hoe kan het ook anders als je met een dwarse single als ‘Chaise Longue’ debuteert. Onlangs tekende de band bij Domino Records en dat kan alleen maar een goed voorteken zijn voor toekomstige releases. Dan is er Talk Show. Dit viertal denderde begin 2019 de Londense scene binnen met hun rauwe postpunkenergie en overweldigende liveshows. Volgens BBC 6 Music zijn ze het Zuid-Londense antwoord op Fontaines DC en dan weten wij wel hoe laat het is. Over Ierse bands gesproken; NewDad is er ook bij in oktober. Dit viertal giet de sombere thema’s van het leven in een luchtig en lo-fi dreampopgeluid met rauwe vocalen. Of, zoals zangeres en gitarist Julie Dawson uitlegt: “It’s music for teenagers, but your dad will probably come to a show and like it more than you.” Ook Molly Payton is toegevoegd aan de line-up: deze Nieuw-Zeelandse artiest maakt indruk met haar rijke stem en vindingrijke teksten die onmogelijk zijn om te negeren.

Vorige week verscheen het nieuwe album van onze favoriete herrieschoppers Chubby & The Gang. Net als debuut ‘Speed Kills’ mocht opvolger ‘The Mutt’s Nuts’ rekenen op prachtige recensies van o.a. NME en The Line of Best Fit. Die laatste schrijft terecht: “Everything fans loved about Speed Kills, Chubby and the Gang serve up once again on The Mutt’s Nuts. Chubby and the Gang are what punk should be in 2021; heavy, fun, and unrepentantly honest.” Dit alles is dus live te horen op London Calling binnenkort.

Voor de aankomende editie kun je een passe-partout aanschaffen. Zo’n ticket geeft toegang tot beide festivaldagen op vrijdag 29 en zaterdag 30 oktober en kost € 39 inclusief servicekosten en exclusief een Paradiso lidmaatschap (€ 4). Deze zijn verkrijgbaar via London Calling en Paradiso. Ook is het festival weer toegankelijk voor iedereen met een Indiestadpas 2020/2021. Aanmelden kan zoals vanouds door jezelf op aanwezig te zetten in het Facebookevenement van London Calling.

Eerste namen London Calling mei 2021: Tiña, The Ninth Wave en meer

Terwijl we van de ene persconferentie in de volgende lockdown rollen, is er deze week ook wat optimistisch nieuws te melden. Vandaag kunnen we namelijk de eerste bevestigde namen voor de aangepaste vorm van London Calling bekendmaken. Op vrijdag 21 en zaterdag 22 mei verwelkomen we Faye Webster, Tiña, The Ninth Wave, Another Michael en MICHELLE in Paradiso. Omdat wij ook nog niet precies weten wat de situatie tegen die tijd is, werken we voor de komende editie met tijdslots. Meer weten? Kijk hier.

Faye Webster, The Ninth Wave, Tiña en meer
Niets is momenteel helemaal zeker, maar dat we groot fan zijn van Faye Webster is een feit. Deze jonge songwriter weet invloeden van alt-country en r&b namelijk nonchalant samen te brengen in haar folkpopnummers. De vijfkoppige band Tiña brengt naast roze cowboyhoeden gelukkig ook een heel stel aanstekelijke indierocknummers mee. Het zestal MICHELLE zorgt voor zomerse sferen met hun laid-back combinatie van pop, r&b en onweerstaanbare grooves. The Ninth Wave brengt het nodige contrast met hun onheilspellende synthpop en Another Michael is er voor de charmante indiefolk in Whitney-achtige sferen.

Aangepaste vorm en geheime tijdslots
Het idee is dat London Calling sowieso plaats kan vinden, zolang het op een veilige manier kan. Daarom werken we voor deze nieuwe vorm van London Calling met tijdslots en een beperkt aantal tickets. Stel dat er in mei 2021 weer meer mensen mogen samenkomen in concertzalen, dan kunnen we bijvoorbeeld extra tickets beschikbaar stellen en tijdslots samenvoegen. Voor de aankomende editie blijft de invulling van de tijdslots geheim; op deze manier staat het ontdekken van nieuwe bands en artiesten als vanouds voorop.

Aanmelden Indiestadpas vanaf maart
De Indiestadpas 2020 blijft geldig voor de nieuwe editie; alle pashouders kunnen een plek reserveren voor maximaal één tijdslot. Dit is ook mogelijk met de nieuwe Indiestadpas van 2021, deze is hier verkrijgbaar. Het reserveren van een tijdslot wordt mogelijk vanaf maart, de precieze datum maken we nog bekend. Tot die tijd houden we genoeg plekken voor Indiestadpashouders vast. Wil je meerdere tijdslots bezoeken? Dan kan het handig zijn om hier alvast een ticket voor aan te schaffen.

Tickets
Hoewel de invulling van de tijdslots geheim blijft, zijn er momenteel al drie tijdslots uitverkocht. Tickets voor de overige tijdslots zijn hier verkrijgbaar. Goed om nog eens te vermelden: omdat er voor deze editie in nieuwe vorm tickets met een lagere prijs verkocht gaan worden, zijn eerder gekochte reguliere tickets en passe-partouts niet geldig voor London Calling 2021. Iedereen met een ticket voor London Calling 2020 heeft hierover per mail bericht ontvangen.

Blokkenschema London Calling online

De laatste naam is binnen en de speeltijden zijn bepaald: hoog tijd om ook het blokkenschema bekend te maken. Niet om op te puzzelen hoor, want overlap tussen de optredens is er haast niet. Maar handig zijn die blokken natuurlijk wel. Bekijk hier het schema met alle 31 bands, inclusief de laatste toevoeging van de Amerikaanse band Ohtis. Ook het vermelden waard: Close Talker speelt op zaterdagmiddag om 15.00 uur in de Tuinzaal van Paradiso Noord. Het concert is onderdeel van het festival en toegankelijk voor alle London Calling-bezoekers.

Programma compleet met Ohtis

Met Ohtis als laatste naam is het programma compleet. De Amerikaanse band combineert donkere alt-country met het autobiografische verhaal van bandlid Sam Swinson. Eerlijk en confronterend, maar daarom zeker niet minder mooi. Eerder werden onder andere Hand Habits, Tropical Fuck Storm, Priests, Pottery en A.A. Bondy al aangekondigd. Bekijk hier alle namen.

Interview met G Flip

Op zaterdag 25 mei speelt G Flip op London Calling, maar in de daaropvolgende maanden zou ze zomaar wel eens kunnen uitgroeien tot een ware popsensatie. G Flip maakt namelijk laagdrempelige, licht-elektronische liedjes met pakkende refreinen die zó catchy zijn dat ze pop-liefhebbers van acht tot tachtig kunnen aanspreken. In aanloop naar London Calling hebben we haar geïnterviewd over haar muziek, haar tour en de keer dat ze in haar broek plaste bij een concert van HAIM. Lees het hele interview hier.

Nieuwe editie London Calling Festival op 24+25 mei 2019

London Calling Festival – Wat in 1992 begon als springplank naar het Europese vasteland voor Britse bands (Blur, Slowdive, Placebo) is in meer dan 25 jaar uitgegroeid tot een showcasefestival voor bands van over de hele wereld.

Tijdens de laatste edities bood London Calling een podium aan onder meer Car Seat Headrest, Shame, Alex Cameron, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, Isaac Gracie, Superorganism, Japanese Breakfast en Marlon Williams.

THE HOWL & THE HUM
Een van de absolute hoogtepunten van de afgelopen London Calling editie was het optreden van The Howl & The Hum in de kleine zaal. Zonder twijfel is de band opnieuw geboekt om deze keer hun talent aan de grote zaal te laten zien. Goed nieuws dus voor iedereen die zich niet de zaal in kon wurmen of niet op London Calling was. Deze band moet je simpelweg live gezien hebben. De eigen omschrijving van de band is als volgt: “The Howl & The Hum is een ellendige discotheek waarin James Bond themaliederen worden geschreven voor films waarin Jimmy nog steeds verliefd is op dat meisje. Ze combineren donkere hypnotiserende popmuziek met post-punk invloeden en schrijven teksten die ervoor zorgen dat je de morgen je moeder wil bellen.”

GENTLY TENDER
Gently Tender bestaat uit Sam Fryer, Pete Mayhew en Will Doyle van wijlen Palma Violets en Celia Archer en Adam Brown van The Big Moon. De bandnaam komt van een liedje van The Incredible String Band en verwijst naar de invloeden die gehaald worden uit oude soul en folk platen. Daar voegen ze zelf een gezonde hoeveelheid psychedelische pop uit de sixties en seventies aan toe. Luister maar eens naar het verdomd fijne ‘2 Chords Good’ dat doet denken aan bands als Spiritualized, The Animals en Kevin Ayers.

PENELOPE ISLES
Penelope Isles is de band rondom broer Jack en zus Lily Wolter. Met ambient waves en fuzzy gitaren creëren ze melodieuze popliedjes met harmonieuze samenzang. Dat klinkt op papier misschien wat zoetgevooisd, maar dat is het allerminst. Jack en Lily produceren alles zelf en hebben en gezonde lo-fi benadering tijdens het opnemen. Op het podium fungeert Penelope Isles als viertal en geven ze hypnotiserende, meeslepende optredens. Dit deden ze onder meer als support voor The Magic Numbers, British Sea Power en Lost Horizons. In 2019 verschijnt het debuutalbum via het gerenommeerde platenlabel Bella Union.
