Catfish and the Bottlemen – Longshot

Elke ochtend om acht uur is het tijd voor een verse Clip van de Dag. Catfish and the Bottlemen uit Wales is terug met (eindelijk) een nieuw nummer: Longshot! En weer heerlijk zoals je van de band gewend bent, aanstekelijke gitaarpop. De band had hun Nederlandse liveprimeur op de eerste editie van Pinguins in Paradiso. Catfish gaat weer op tournee, maar Nederlandse data zijn er nog niet. Ook een releasedatum van het nieuwe album is nog onbekend.

Iedere week hoor je een selectie van de mooiste blues en de vetste bluesrock, met veel fonkelnieuwe releases, zoals je 24/7 op Pinguin Blues kunt horen .

Curator van het wekelijkse uurtje is ‘Blues Boy’ Harry Radstake, die als album-coördinator en redacteur bij Blues Magazine dagelijks de mooiste bluesrock albums door zijn handen en langs zijn oren laat gaan.

Pinguin Radio presenteert om 22:00 uur Heaven Radio #147

Pinguin Radio en Popmagazine Heaven delen twee belangrijke eigenschappen: een passie voor goede muziek en een volstrekt onafhankelijke opstelling. Dat moest Popmagazine Heavennatuurlijk tot een samenwerking leiden

Heaven verzorgt iedere dinsdagavond van 22:00 tot 23:00 een uur lang de muziek op Pinguin Radio. Net als Pinguin heeft Heaven oor voor – bijna – alle popmuziek. In het uurtje radio hoor je muziek uit verschillende genres: (classic)rock, roots, folk, soul, world, jazz en blues.

De nieuwe Heaven staat vol met jaarlijstjes. En lijstjes zijn leuk, zeker als ze zo uitwaaieren als in het blad voor de muzikale fijnproever. Ze bieden uren luisterplezier – via YouTube, Spotify of een andere streamingdienst – en je doet op zeker een paar geweldige ontdekkingen.

Natuurlijk staan er ook weer mooie interviews in het blad, zoals met de Texaan Garrett T. Capps die met cowboyhoed en akoestische gitaar poseert in de Koepelgevangenis in Haarlem. Volgens Heaven is deze space cowboy de americanarevelatie van het jaar. Check zijn album In The Shadows (Again). Ook Gold Star en Parker Millsap zijn geen household names, maar ook zij maakten afgelopen jaar indruk met sterke rootsalbums.

Bekend zijn uiteraard wel Boudewijn de Groot en Benjamin Herman. Altsaxofonist Herman viert dit jaar zijn 25-jarig artiestenjubileum met maar liefst drie albums. Troubadour De Groot had al in 1964 zijn eerste hit, maar is nog altijd productief.
Thomas Azier, Maartje Meijer en Sofie Winterson vertegenwoordigen een nieuwe lichting Nederlands talent. Thomas Dybdahl en Cat Power ontroeren met hun ontboezemingen.

In de serie Portret van…, dit keer programmeur Lisa de Jongh van het Haarlemse Patronaat. Donna Summer’s Live And More uit 1978 staat centraal in It was 40 years ago today.

In de recensierubriek, met meer dan 100 titels, nieuwe albums van o.a. Christine And The Queens, Rosanne Cash, Cécile McLorin Salvant, David Crosby, Steve Forbert, Laura Gibson, Emma Peel, The Marcus King Band, Marianne Faithfull, Ace of Cups en Daniel Romano.

Deerhunter – Death in Midsummer

Welkom terug Deerhunter! Bijna vier jaar hebben we moeten wachten op nieuwe muziek van de band uit Atlanta, maar zoals de volkswijsheid wil, ‘dan heb je ook wat’. Death in Midsummer is het openingsnummer cq smaakmaker van het nieuwe album van Deerhunter, dat op 18 januari volgend jaar publiek zal worden gemaakt.

De 7e van Deerhunter gaat ‘Why Hasn’t Everybody Disappeared’ heten en wordt door de band omschreven als een science fiction album over het heden.  Dat klinkt interessant. Voorbode Death in Midsummer is een zorgvuldig opbouwende indie-Americana ballad met meeslepende gitaren en een zich langzaam opwindende Bradford Cox, die zingt over vergankelijkheid. Cox en co maken zich zorgen over de toekomt van hun land. Wie de Amerikaanse politiek een beetje volgt, weet dat daar alle reden toe is.

Deerhunter zou Deerhunter niet zijn als de politieke lading niet verstopt zou zitten in een tekst, die voor verschillende uitleg vatbaar is. Zo komt het woord ‘Death’  in het hele nummer niet voor en ‘Midsummer’ ook niet. Ook muzikaal laat de band zich weer moeilijk vastpinnen. Zo houdt de band de spanning er in en de interesse vast, al zeven albums lang.
