Big Red Machine – I Won’t Run From It

Big Red Machine is de naam van het samenwerkingsverbond van Justin Vernon a.k.a. Bon Iver en Aaron Dessner, gitarist en songwriter van The National. Het duo bracht eerder dit jaar een kwartet songs uit die alleen te streamen waren op www.p-e-o-p-l-e.com, een initiatief van Vernon en de Dessner broers met als doel om jonge kunstenaars een platform te geven. Alle nummers zijn nu ook te beluisteren op de reguliere streamingsdiensten.

Op 31 augustus verschijnt het album van Big Red Machine waarvan we eerder al de song Hymnostic draaide. Misschien is I Won’t Run From It nog wel mooier. De stem van Bon Iver is hierop nog herkenbaarder en prettiger.

Vernon en Dessner hebben eerder samen muziek uitgebracht. Op Dark Was The Night (2009), een benefietalbum voor de Red Hot Organisation staat een nummer dat Big Red Machine heet, een titel die nu dus deinst doet als bandnaam.

De People site draait nu nog in een betaversie. In augustus wordt de site officieel gelanceerd tijdens een non-profit festival in Berlijn dat wordt gecureerd door Vernon, de twee Dessner broers en National zanger Matt Berninger. Misschien is Sufjan Stevens ook van de partij, want ook hij is betrokken bij de organisatie.

Pinguin Radio presenteert om 22:00 uur Heaven Radio #128

HeavenPinguin Radio en Popmagazine Heaven delen twee belangrijke eigenschappen: een passie voor goede muziek en een volstrekt onafhankelijke opstelling. Dat moest natuurlijk tot een samenwerking leiden.

Heaven verzorgt iedere dinsdagavond van 22:00 tot 23:00 een uur lang de muziek op Pinguin Radio. Net als Pinguin heeft Heaven oor voor – bijna – alle popmuziek. In het uurtje radio hoor je muziek uit verschillende genres: (classic)rock, roots, folk, soul, world, jazz en blues.

Heaven #5, 2018 heeft maar liefst twee omslagen. Op de voorkant staat Raymond van het Groenewoud, op de achterkant prijken de jonge heren van DeWolff. Dat in verband met een special die Heaven wijdt aan het spiksplinternieuwe rootsfestival Once I A Blue Moon, dat zaterdag 25 augustus plaatsvindt in het Amsterdamse Bos. Ook de hoofdstad goes americana. Interviews zijn er met DeWolff, I’m With Her en The Dawn Brothers, alle drie te zien op het festival, naast David Crosby The Mavericks en vele anderen.

In de ‘gewone’ Heaven het uitgebreide vraaggesprek met Raymond van het Groenewoud, die een driedelige box samenstelde uit zijn oeuvre met de titel Archivaris. Ook zijn er fijne gesprekken met Beechwood, Low, Jonathan Wilson en Yorick van Norden.

In de serie Portret van…, dit keer podiumdirecteur Marlies Timmermansvan het Utrechtse Ekko. Liz Phair’s spraakmakende debuut uit 1993 Exile In Guyville staat centraal in It was 25 years ago today.

In de recensierubriek, met meer dan 100 titels, nieuwe albums van o.a. Neko Case, Charles Lloyd & Lucinda Williams, Curse of Lono, American Aquarium, Dawes, The Wood Brothers, Dirty Projectors, Arthur Buck, RVG, Israel Nash, Needlepoint en Smail Mail.

Caroline Benelux is een muzieklabel dat zich grotendeels richt op indie en alternatieve muziek. Het jonge enthousiaste Benelux team is onderdeel van Caroline International dat kantoren heeft over de hele wereld. Caroline is een revival van het in 1973 opgerichte Caroline Label, dat oorspronkelijk door Richard Branson werd opgericht om platen uit te brengen binnen zijn eigen muzikale passie: alternatieve prog-rock. Het huidige label richt zich op alles wat goed en credible is in de wereld van de indie muziek: St. Vincent, Bear’s Den, Tame Impala, Childish Gambino, Nick Mulvey, Thurston Moore, The Amazons en Nederlandse bands als Orange Skyline, PAUW, De Staat, Chef’Special & many more.

Suede – Life Is Golden

NEW ALBUM ‘THE BLUE HOUR’

OUT 21ST SEPTEMBER

Suede have today released their new single and video for ‘Life is Golden’. Taken from the band’s highly-anticipated, forthcoming album, ‘The Blue Hour’, the track is the first official single from the record. 

  

‘Life is Golden’ has all the hallmarks of a classic Suede track, from Brett Anderson’s aching, transcendent vocal through to the brooding, dramatic atmosphere evoked by the band’s distinctive performance. 

 

The song is accompanied by a film made by one of Suede’s early collaborators, filmmaker Mike Christie, that he shot in Pripyat, the town that neighbours Chernobyl power station”

“It’s not about the tragedy of the disaster that happened all those years ago – it’s about the unstoppable force of life that’s consumed the desolate landscape left behind by humans. It seemed wonderfully apt to set the song to cracked concrete, all conquered by towering golden trees.”

 

Suede’s new record ‘The Blue Hour’ is the final part of the triptych of albums recorded by the band since they reformed and released 2013’s ‘Bloodsports’. The album is also complemented by some of the subject matter of Brett Anderson’s recent memoir ‘Coal Black Mornings’.

 

Suede’s previous studio album ‘Night Thoughts’ was released to great critical acclaim in 2016, going on to chart at Number 6 in the UK album charts.

 

The band are set for a series of European tour dates in September and October, including two shows at London’s Eventim Apollo on the 12th and 13th October. Full dates can be found on the band’s website. 

Maribou State – Feel Good (feat. Khruangbin)

Het Britse duo Maribou State uit Hertfordshire maakt elektronische muziek die zijn basis niet vindt in de traditionele electrohoek, maar in hiphop, soul en funk. De downtempo beats, aangevuld met live-instrumenten doet denken aan genregenoten als Groove Armada en James Blake. Daarom past de samenwerking op Feel Good met Khruangbin ook zo goed. Khruangbin is bezig met een mondiale zegetocht lang clubs festivals en radio & tv studio’s. Op internet zijn de avonturen van het Texaanse trio van nabij te volgen. De sound waarmee Khruangbin  vrienden maakt is retro en nuevo tegelijk, aards en dromerig, rootsy en exotisch.

Cabbage – Gibraltar Ape

Deze vijf gasten dragen hometown Manchester met trots in hun paspoort. Dat ze daarbij weinig goeds over de broertjes Gallagher te zeggen hebben is typisch Cabbage. Hun anarchistische neo-postpunk doet meer aan the Fall en Buzzcocks denken, maar dan met de grijns van de Happy Mondays en de balls-out chaos van Fat White Family.

En hieronder onze recensie van het optreden in de Lima op Lowlands 2018:

Als je zowel met schimmige postpunkbands uit de jaren tachtig als met Oasis wordt vergeleken weet je dat je bijzonder bent. De muziek van het Britse Cabbage is smerig en vuig maar tegelijkertijd ook ontzettend hitgevoelig. Meezingen kun je al na een refrein. Zie daar dus de Oasis-vergelijking, al moet je geen nieuwe Wonderwall van ze verwachten. Cabbage kent maar een versnelling en dat is die van voluit. Geen ballads, ben jij gek De jochies, want dat zijn het nog, hebben dezelfde Britse bravoure als de Gallagher-broers. Als Lee Broadbent nog even het publiek inspringt kan de conclusie getrokken worden: deze band gaan we vaker terugzien op Lowlands, en dan waarschijnlijk in een grotere tent. (tekst: Milo Lambers)

Jade Bird – Uh Huh

Jade Bird is dé nieuwe stem van Groot-Brittanië. De pas 20-jarige maakt country, folk met vleugjes poprock weer helemaal hip. Het roodharige grietje uit Hexham gaat als een speer; ze was al te gast in grote tv-shows en…. ze stond afgelopen weekend op Lowlands. Alleen met haar gitaar kreeg ze de Lima muisstil. Maar haar muziek is niet per sé stil hoor, luister maar naar dit rockende Uh Huh.

Pinguin Radio draaide plaatjes op Lowlands 2018

ArmadiLLow was dag en nacht the place to be. Relaxen, eten, drinken, dansen; het kon allemaal in dit kick-ass 24-uursgebied van Lowlands Festival 2018. Op donderdag opende Pinguin Radio het feest in de ArmadiLLow met een set van 12:00 tot 18:00 uur. DJ’s van dienst waren DJ Hans Vrijmoed & Gijs Vervliet.

LowlandsEn omdat zo’n LLoase een topsoundtrack verdient, stond hier van donderdagmiddag t/m maandagochtend onafgebroken een all-killer line-up met DJ’s, die in hun eigen booth volcontinu de fijnste platen met die typische Lowlandsfeel draaien.

Daar horen natuurlijk gitaren en indie bij, maar ook gechillde elektronische sunrise-sets en allerlei ander festivallekkers. Overdag is die soundtrack bovendien in allerbeste handen bij vier toonaangevende onlineradiostations: Pinguin Radio, Red Light Radio, Stranded FM en Operator Radio.
