Matt Berninger – Distant Axis

Vandaag brengt Matt Berninger de single Distant Axis uit, afkomstig van zijn aanstaande album Serpentine Prison. De frontman van The National schreef het nummer in samenwerking met Walter Martin (The Walkmen). De twee ontmoetten elkaar voor het eerst in 2015, toen The National samen met The Walkmen in de zuidelijke staten van de VS optrad. Naast vriendschap ontstond er ook een creatieve connectie en deze track is daar het resultaat van. Eind mei bracht Matt Berninger de eerste single van het nieuwe album uit. Onder andere Pitchfork en Rolling Stone schreven vol lof over de titeltrack, die werd geproduceerd door Booker T. Jones.

Washed Out – Time to Walk Away

Washed Out is Atlanta-based producer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Ernest Greene. Voor dit 4e album is Ernest terug bij de Sub Pop familie. Purple Noon is geschreven, opgenomen en geproduceerd door Greene zelf, de mixen zijn verzorgd door frequent samenwerkingspartner Ben H. Allen (Paracosm, Within and Without). Op de productie van het album volgde een korte periode van schrijven voor andere artiesten (met name met Sudan Archives op haar debuut Athena), waardoor Greene voor het eerst genres als R & B en moderne pop kon verkennen. Deze helderdere, robuustere geluiden vonden hun weg naar de nummers van Purple Noon en markeren een nieuw hoofdstuk in de groei van Greene, zowel als producer als songwriter.

De kusten van de Middellandse Zee inspireren Purple Noon en Greene was al maanden aan het plannen een videoclip voor de single Too Late op te nemen. “My inspiration was a Mediterranean sunset I saw late last year, and the plan was to shoot on the coast of Italy with a team of UK and European collaborators. As we got closer to the shoot date, word about the severity and the speed of the virus started becoming daily news, and it became clear it wasn’t going to happen the way we’d planned. We tried to move the shoot several times (to Malta, Croatia, Spain, and eventually the UK), and one after another, countries shut their borders. Seeing Italy hit so hard was especially difficult to see.

I put up an IG post asking for fans to help me come up with the raw footage I had in mind – those first few days, as I was going through photos of my trips and tours, the memories of traveling and experiences I’d had took on a new significance. I wanted the video to capture those same moments for other people in their lives, and give us all an excuse to remember what it’ll look like again when it passes.

 

I went in thinking if I got 100 clips, I’d have enough to make the video I wanted to make. 30 minutes in, I had the 100 clips, and a few days in, I had over 1,200 clips – from London, Bali, Okinawa, Ann Arbor, Dubrovnik and a few hundred other places around the world. It was pretty amazing for me to see the vids and pics flood in like they did.”

Nana Adjoa releases new single “No Room” and announces debut album

Nana Adjoa releases her latest single, “No Room.” The track finds Nana considering the empty space that often fills vacant conversation, stating that the track is about, “Talking; talking too much about nothing. Just filling the room or the conversation with fillers. Creating a false sense of security and control of the moment, while simultaneously killing it. Leaving nothing to discover, no room to get to really know someone or experience something new.” 

 

“No Room” is joined by a compelling visual that traces the cacophony of noise one may feel inside the head as a result of continuous external opinions, judgements, or hollow conversations. Moreover, the video is a graceful nod to Nana’s Ghanaian heritage. Creative Director Rudy Asibey says that, “The vision was to bring Nana’s duality in culture and music together. Her name stands for so much more in Ghanaian culture. Nana means king/queen and Adjoa is her day name (‘Monday’), which stands for peacemaker. For me, Nana’s music is a journey to finding the answers to life. Nana guides us with music to help us find those answers. I wanted to bring that journey to life in the visuals. In this video, we see more of her Ghanaian culture and a journey to finding self—even though people want to put you in a box or want you to become someone else. In the end, she chooses herself. As Nana’s name represents, I hope her music guides people to choose for themselves, to learn more about their heritage in order to gain learnings from heritage and grow. Especially in these times, it is important to know where you’re from, in order to know where you’re going. We could all use a peacemaker.” The visual delivery was furthermore amplified by Video Director Robbert Doelwijt Jr., who noted, “I relate to Nana’s message about small talk not providing us with enough room for imagination. So it was fun translating that into this video that almost feels like one continues sequence, because of the wipe transitions and match cuts. At the end of the day I wanted the video to show Nana on her way to find room to be creative, despite the things holding her back.”

 

“No Room” furthermore marks the announcement of Nana’s debut album, Big Dreaming Ants, set for a September 24th release. The timing of Big Dreaming Ants feels auspicious. As the world seemingly unfolds around us, Nana quietly ponders identity, questioning authority, online provocation and digital clashes, and the meaning (and inherent tension) of national identity or pride. 

 

The track follows a warm reception to previous singles “She’s Stronger,” which was released on Future Classic’s Wilder imprint, and “Throw Stones.” “She’s Stronger” was selected to be KCRW’s “Today’s Top Tune” and received positive reviews from the likes of Cat Power, Toro y Moi, and Vulfpeck. With regards to “Throw Stones,” C-Heads Magazine proclaimed that, “everything about this track is simply magic,” whilst The Voice Newspaper wrote: “Producing a sound that is rich in tonal textures and is as intimate as it is expansive…this young lady is set to be your new favourite artist you didn’t know about.”

Lianne La Havas releast video voor Radiohead cover Weird Fishes

En terwijl we met spanning wachten op dit meesterwerk, verrast de Engelse singer-songwriter ons met de offical video voor haar recent uitgebrachte cover Radiohead’s moderne klassieker ‘Weird Fishes’

In de video zien we een rauw, betoverend optreden van Lianne La Havas die samen met haar band in de studio staat.

En vangen we een blik op van hoe het is om de zangeres live in actie te zien.

!!! – Do The Dial Tone

Legendary dance-punk outfit !!! are back, here to help shake the stay-at-home malaise with an EP of dance-floor focused songs, titled Certified Heavy Kats. The EP will be released on Warp on July 31st.

From the lascivious 2-step of “Do The Dial Tone” to the caffeinated footwork pop of “Maybe You Can’t Make It”, this collection follows in the footsteps of last year’s standout LP Wallop, paying homage to the varying strains of club music the band has always turned to for inspiration. Mixing elements of Chicago House, UK Garage, NYC Disco, and a bit of everything in between, Certified Heavy Katz is a high-wire act between subtly-produced grooves and controlled sonic chaos from a veteran band firing on all cylinders, featuring contributions from Liars frontman Angus Andrew, Maria Uzor of UK duo Sink Ya Teeth, and longtime co-vocalist Meah Pace.

“This is us exploring the outer edges of what we do,” explains frontman Nic Offer. “We try a lot of different things with the hopes of coming up with something fresh by getting it wrong. How wrong did we get it this time?”

Lead single “Do The Dial Tone” is out now with a lyric video by animator Cheng-Hsu Chung, continuing an exciting creative partnership with the band. Chung previously directed the deliriously freaky video for the Wallop single “Couldn’t Have Known”. “We thought of ‘Do The Dial Tone’ as a KLF/Enigma-type call and response on the eve of destruction,” says Offer, and it’s easy to imagine a doomsday rave writhing it out to the driving breakbeat and paranoid synth lines.

Elsewhere on the EP, the band explores liquefied neo-soul on “Let It Fall”, gothic club duets with Angus Andrew on “Tighten The Grip”, Deee-Lite-era sampler funk on “Wonderful Life”, and psychedelic house on the closing anthem “Walk It Off”.

After almost two decades of unforgettable dance-floor moments and raucous live sets, these hardworking NYC icons show no signs of letting up. Certified Heavy Katz is a friendly reminder that we could all could use some more !!! in our lives. Our ears and hips will be thankful.

James Dean Bradfield – There’ll Come A War

James Dean Bradfield, de zanger en gitarist van de succesvolle band Manic Street Preachers waarmee hij een aantal grote hits scoorde zoals Motorcycle Emptiness, A Design For Life en If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next, kondigde afgelopen donderdag zijn 2e soloalbum EVEN IN EXILE aan.

Dit viel samen met de release van z’n eerste radio single THE BOY FROM THE PLANTATION. De plaat is geïnspireerd op het leven en de dood van de Chileense activist, zanger en dichter Victor Jara. Eerder verscheen er al een videoclip bij There’ll Come A War.

SOKO – Oh, To Be a Rainbow!

De in LA woonachtige maar Franse singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist en actrice Soko brengt vrijdag haar nieuwe album Feel Feelings uit.

De Francaise, die wat jaartjes terug een grote hit scoorde met het liedje I’ll Kill Her, maakt sensuele, avontuurlijke en intieme liedjes, die doorgaans lieflijk klinken maar vaak ook donkere onderwerpen huisvest.

In aanloop naar de release van haar album, is nu haar single Oh, To Be a Rainbow! met videoclip in promotie gegaan.

GIAN – Balans

Het Rotterdamse duo GIAN tekende een contract bij Caroline Benelux en bracht vorige week de single BALANS uit. Op 25 september verschijnt de nieuwe EP. GIAN is het vooruitstrevende geesteskind van drummer/vocalist Johnny Ray en vocalist Eddie Dukan. Het duo staat bekend om dromerige teksten, opzwepende beats en het creatieve gebruik van elektrische gitaren. Johnny Ray speelde voorheen in de band Taymir en is sinds 2014 de drummer van Rondé. Na een intensieve Popronde in 2019 en andere optredens – waaronder het voorprogramma van Mike Shinoda in AFAS Live – liet GIAN afgelopen januari een sterke indruk achter tijdens Eurosonic Noorderslag. BALANS gaat over een nachtelijke ontmoeting van twee mensen die hun gedachten in de club proberen te ontvluchten. Ze balanceren daarin tussen droom en realiteit.

In navolging van de single BALANS die vorige week verscheen op Caroline Benelux, brengt GIAN vandaag de bijbehorende video uit. Bossen, weides en een adelijk landgoed vormen het stijvolle decor voor het Rotterdamse duo.
