Barbarossa – Always Free

Barbarossa a.k.a. British singer-songwriter and producer, James Mathé, returns with his heart warming new single “Always Free” his first new music since 2018’s album Lier.
 
Recorded with electronic producer Ghost Culture in their hometown of Margate “Always Free” is a tender, emotively charged and electronically tinged single. Written and recorded in December 2019, Mathé explains that the song is about mental freedom (any relevance to our current situation is purely coincidental):
 
“‘Always free’ is about me reminding myself that I always have access to freedom from my thoughts if I can find stillness and am open to change. I really struggle with this daily but sometimes a song/film/book/my kids or a conversation might remind me just how simple it can be to just let go of trying to control the outcome and get out of my comfort zone. That’s where the good shit is, it’s in those moments.”
Mathé has been releasing music under the moniker Barbarossa since 2006 having been signed to legendary Scottish imprint the Fence Collective for the albums “Sea of Blood” and “Chemical Campfires” and latterly to Memphis Industries for “Bloodlines”, “Imager” and “Lier”. His music has been used to soundtrack a whole host of TV shows including How I Met Your Mother, Suits and Elementary.

 

Barbarossa – Broken Beauty

Barbarossa is de artiestennaam van James Mathé, een zanger/componist/multi-instrumentalist uit Londen, die onlangs zijn vijfde album uitbracht. Twaalf jaar al maakt hij muziek, maar zoals het spreekwoord luidt voornamelijk voor dovemansoren. Het begon veelbelovend toen Stones, een track van zijn debuutalbum (2006) aansloeg, maar het is tot nu bij dat ene succesje gebleven. Onder eigen naam dan, want als rechterhand van José González heeft Mathé wel voor volle zalen gestaan.

Ondanks het gebrek aan aandacht is Barbarossa  stug doorgegaan met platen maken. Eind vorige maand verscheen zijn vijfde. En wat wil het geval? Waar eerdere release vrijwel onopgemerkt bleven, wordt ‘Lier’ wel opgepikt. Wat productie betreft (van Ghost Culture) is het Barbarossa‘s meest verzorgde plaat. Stilistisch borduurt hij voor op de onthaastte, detaillistische laptop folk van zijn vorige albums. De grootste veranderingen hebben plaatsgevonden in Mathé’s privéleven. Hij is vader geworden (Barbapappa!) en verhuisd van het drukke Londen naar het landelijk Kent. Ouder en beter, het is niet ondenkbaar.

Met zijn prominente bed van synthesizers is Broken Beaty wat klankkleur betreft niet helemaal representatief voor het album,  wat sfeer betreft weer wel. Zelf noemt de artiest Joni Mitchell en CSN&Y als belangrijke invloeden, ons doen zijn songs meer denken aan een minder arty James Blake en een minder freaky Alt-J.
