Whitney – Forever Turned Around

Whitney – Forever Turned Around (Secretly Canadian/Konkurrent)

Opeens is Whitney daar, met de heerlijke hit No Woman. Het is 2016 en je weet meteen dat het raak is. Het hele album van de band klopt ook nog eens en die falset van zingende drummer Julien Ehrlich went sneller dan gedacht. De Amerikanen teren inmiddels ruim drie jaar op het album Light Upon The Lake en daarom is het fijn dat de nieuwe plaat er is.

Forever Turned Around is geen album geworden dat laat horen dat de band muzikaal enorme sprongen heeft gemaakt. Het is een album dat voortborduurt op de kwaliteit van het debuut. De folky countrypoprock van het in Chicago residerende gezelschap ademt nog altijd gemoedelijkheid en zorgzaamheid. Zwaarmoedig wordt het gelukkig nooit. Past ook niet echt bij die stem van Ehrlich, eerlijk gezegd.

De instrumentatie is andermaal rijk, met strijkers en blaasinstrumenten. Het voorkomt min of meer dat een enkele song mogelijk iets te sterk voortkabbelt. Echte uitschieters zijn dan ook niet te vinden op Forever Turned Around, dat een soort herfstachtige kleurenpracht oproept, wanneer je de ogen sluit. De albumcover sluit daar naadloos op aan.

Speels is het instrumentale, ruim twee minuten durende Rhododendron. Lekker jazzy, een trompet pakt de hoofdrol. De heren moeten gelachen hebben bij het bedenken van die titel: Rhododendron. Had Tol Hansse nog geleefd; hij zou er zonder twijfel zijn goedkeuring aan hebben gegeven. Achter de Rhododendron was immers een van zijn grote hits, in 1978.

Mooie woorden van de band op de cd-hoes voor geliefden en zij die meespelen op Forever Turned Around. De wereld wordt een stuk mooier van bands als Whitney. Dat er geen nieuw No Woman te vinden is op de tweede worp zien we daarom moeiteloos door de vingers. Pieter Visscher

Zeg het ze, Kate. Zég het ze! Ook op haar derde album neemt Kate Tempest natuurlijk geen blad voor de mond. Het is de Britse woordkunstenares op z’n kwetsbaarst.

The Book Of Traps And Lessons is elf nummers lang in-your-face spoken word waar overduidelijke en dieper liggende boodschappen elkaar in hoog tempo opvolgen. Zoals we van haar gewend zijn. Tot zover niet veel nieuws onder de zon, maar schijn bedriegt. Tempest ontroert meer dan ooit. Ze is ook daarin confronterender. Mogelijk heeft Rick Rubin er een rol gespeeld. De topproducer.

Tempest houdt ons een spiegel voor. Opnieuw. Over de leegheid van sociale media en apps, zoals WhatsApp et cetera. Sociale contacten lijken waardevol op een smartphone, maar ze stellen meestal geen reet voor. Tempest komt continu binnen. Het wemelt andermaal van de metaforen en je weet dondersgoed wat ze bedoelt. Hoewel er ook hoop is. Niet alles is gitzwart.

Kapitalisme gaat voor de bijl, racisme wordt keihard op de bek geslagen, de vervreemding van elkaar, terwijl je denkt dat je de ander zo ontzettend goed kent via de whatsApps, facebooks en instagrams van deze wereld. Oja, het ten dode opgeschreven Engeland.

In All Humans Too Late is Tempest emotioneler dan ooit.

‘Sucking on pork ribs
And summoning pornography
So that we can come when we fuck

Our partners don’t know us
Our families are strangers
Our friends make us nervous‘

Muzikaal is het ingetogener. Tempest heeft zich losgeworsteld van hiphopconventies en slaat ook die sector in de muziekwereld hard om de oren. Tempest is aan het woord en je luistert.

The Book Of Traps And Lessons is geen plaat die je opzet terwijl je de nieuwe buren voor het eerst uitnodigt voor sjasliek, gamba’s en moten zalm op de grill – al kan de koude pils een hoop goedmaken. The Book Of Traps And Lessons is een album dat je wil horen in de late avonduren. Bij schemerlicht, hangend op de canapé. Indringender wordt het bijna nooit. Pieter Visscher

Aldous Harding – Designer

Ook het derde album van Aldous Harding, Designer, is geproduceerd door John Parish, die we kennen van zijn werk voor Eels en Tracy Chapman en vooral van zijn samenwerking met PJ Harvey. Designer is de opvolger van het uitstekende The Party (2017).

Het verschijnt een jaar na het briljante, alsook bijzonder openhartige Make Way For Love van Hardings ex Marlon Williams. Waar Williams alle persoonlijke kaarten op tafel legt, blijft Harding meer op de vlakte. Harding deed, na lang aandringen, zelfs mee met het schitterende Nobody Gets What They Want Anymore op Williams’ laatste. Een door twee partijen bezongen relatiebreuk. Hartverwarmend in al zijn emotionaliteit.

Niet dat de Nieuw-Zeelandse wegduikt in platitudes en triviaal gefröbel, geenszins zelfs, maar het achterste van haar tong laat ze nooit zien.
Mooie liedjes staan er wel op het met akoestische gitaar, saxofoon, xylofoon en synthesizers aangeklede Designer, dat her en der wat doet denken aan het werk van Nick Drake.

Aldous Harding is muzikaal lastig te vangen. Maar als je haar te pakken hebt, laat je niet meer los. “I feel your love”, aldus Harding. Pieter Visscher

Blokkenschema London Calling online

De laatste naam is binnen en de speeltijden zijn bepaald: hoog tijd om ook het blokkenschema bekend te maken. Niet om op te puzzelen hoor, want overlap tussen de optredens is er haast niet. Maar handig zijn die blokken natuurlijk wel. Bekijk hier het schema met alle 31 bands, inclusief de laatste toevoeging van de Amerikaanse band Ohtis. Ook het vermelden waard: Close Talker speelt op zaterdagmiddag om 15.00 uur in de Tuinzaal van Paradiso Noord. Programma compleet met Ohtis

Met Ohtis als laatste naam is het programma compleet. De Amerikaanse band combineert donkere alt-country met het autobiografische verhaal van bandlid Sam Swinson. Eerlijk en confronterend, maar daarom zeker niet minder mooi. Eerder werden onder andere Hand Habits, Tropical Fuck Storm, Priests, Pottery en A.A. Bondy al aangekondigd. Bekijk hier alle namen.

Interview met G Flip

Op zaterdag 25 mei speelt G Flip op London Calling, maar in de daaropvolgende maanden zou ze zomaar wel eens kunnen uitgroeien tot een ware popsensatie. G Flip maakt namelijk laagdrempelige, licht-elektronische liedjes met pakkende refreinen die zó catchy zijn dat ze pop-liefhebbers van acht tot tachtig kunnen aanspreken. In aanloop naar London Calling hebben we haar geïnterviewd over haar muziek, haar tour en de keer dat ze in haar broek plaste bij een concert van HAIM. Lees het hele interview hier.
