Pinguin Radio presenteert om 22:00 uur Heaven Radio #326

Pinguin Radio en Popmagazine Heaven delen twee belangrijke eigenschappen: een passie voor goede muziek en een volstrekt onafhankelijke opstelling. Dat moest natuurlijk tot een samenwerking leiden.

Heaven verzorgt iedere dinsdagavond van 22:00 tot 23:00 een uur lang de muziek op Pinguin Radio. Net als Pinguin heeft Heaven oor voor – bijna – alle popmuziek. In het uurtje radio hoor je muziek uit verschillende genres: (classic)rock, roots, folk, soul, world, jazz en blues.

Liefhebbers van Heaven Radio luisteren natuurlijk ook naar ons zachtere zusje Pinguin Pluche.

Porcupine Tree – Rats Return

De Engelse prog rockers van Porcupine Tree hebben een nieuwe (4e) single-video uit: ‘Rats Return’. Het is de voorbode van het nieuwe (11e) studio-album ‘Closure/Continuation’ dat a.s. vrijdag 24 juni verschijnt via Music For Nations/Sony Music. Het is de opvolger van ‘The Incident’ uit 2009, en het eerste nieuwe studio-album in 13 jaar dat Steven Wilson, Richard Barbieri en Gavin Harrison uitbrengen.

De vorige singles ‘Harriddan’, ‘Herd Culling’ en het prachtige verrassende ‘Of the New Day’ (zie video’s hieronder) zijn de perfecte herintroductie van Porcupine Trees onderscheidende sound. Een muzikale trip die de terugkeer inluidt van deze internationale gevierde rockband die muzikaal laveert tussen acts als bijvoorbeeld Genesis, ELP, Yes, Marillion, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Rush, Opeth en Tool.

Op maandag 7 november 2022 geeft de band een exclusief Benelux concert in de Ziggo Dome Amsterdam (NL). In oktober 2010 stond de band voor het laatst op het podium.

Top van de IJsberg – Editie 2022 Fête de la Musique

Ook dit jaar hebben we weer je hulp ingeroepen bij het samenstellen van de Top van de IJsberg, de 150 beste platen uit de popgeschiedenis, volgens de luisteraars van Pinguin Radio.

Coach Party – Nothing Is Real

Jess Eastwood, de gangmaker van Coach Party mag zich nog weleens kwaad maken (FLAG), of haar partner het leven lastig (Weird Me Out). Op nieuwe single Nothing is Real laat ze horen ook een zachte kant te hebben, een dromerige zelfs. Maar terwijl Jess mijmert dat ze net als haar vriendinnen best wel wat zorgelozer zou willen, hakken de gitaren er weer stevig in. Het contrast tussen zang en gitaren geeft Nothing Is Real nummer wel wat shoegazerigs. Nothing Is Real is het titelnummer van de derde EP van Coach Party dat net als Wet Leg van het eiland Wight komt.

Popwarmer: The Haunted Youth – Broken

The Haunted Youth begint op stoom te komen. Vielen er vorig jaar nog gaten van meerdere maanden tussen releases, Broken is verschenen terwijl Shadows nog aan het klimmen is in de Graadmeter. En nu extra veel Broken op Pinguin Pop als Popwarmer van de week.

Het feit dat je dit leest betekent dat ook Broken weer een schot in de roos is. Wederom getuigt Joachim Liebens van een verlangen naar een tijd die hij alleen van horen zeggen kent; de roemruchte jaren tachtig toen men bepaald niet zuinig was met een galmpje hier of een echootje daar. De beat is up dit keer, dat maakt Broken dansbaar zonder echt een dansnummer te zijn. De spannende opbouw vindt zijn apotheose in een door gitaren gedomineerd eindspel. De fade out suggereert dat er ook een album versie bestaat.

Donkere drums, dromerige synths en een catchy en zwoel geluid. Met haar solotour speelde Eefje de Visser al eerder in Paradiso en clubs en festivals in binnen-en buitenland. Ze liet hier al een meer elektronisch geluid horen, waarmee ze inmiddels ook buiten de land- en taalgrenzen wordt opgepikt. Bijvoorbeeld haar nummer ‘Zwarte Zon’ is de volgende stap in deze richting, een bitterzoet, broeierig nummer over het afsluiten van een waardevolle periode en het vinden van nieuwe energie en inspiratie. Het vierde album van Eefje de Visser ‘Bitterzoet’ heeft zij in 2020 uitgebracht. Onlangs verscheen haar nieuwe single EP ‘Blauwe Regen’ met de single ‘Storm’.

Whitney – Real Love

Whitney, het Chicago-duo van Julien Ehlrich en Max Kakacek, keert terug met de aankondiging van hun derde album, SPARK, dat op 16 september uitkomt op Secretly Canadian en viert dat met een voorproefje, hun eerste single/video, “REAL LOVE”. Met SPARK herintroduceert Whitney zichzelf als een eigentijds syndicaat van klassieke pop, de fantasierijke, vertederende nummers met pakkende melodie zoals je van Whitney gewend bent, op SPARK gewikkeld in paisley-print Dilla-beats en weelderige elektronica. SPARK is echter geen radicale heruitvinding, het is Whitney die een eerlijke weergave geeft van meerdere stappen die ze in één nemen in hun carrière en het leven zelf. SPARK behoudt de warmte en het gemak van Whitneys vroege werk; deze nummers gloeien met de nieuwheid van nu.
