Pinguin Radio presenteert de Vinyl33 – Week 16 / 2020

Record Store Day Nederland, met de onafhankelijke platenzaak als middelpunt, breidt haar activiteiten met de Vinyl33, verder uit.

Op Pinguin Radio draaien we elke week zo veel mogelijk nieuwe releases, de hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer, de klimmer van de week en uiteraard veel tracks uit de top 10.

Clipprimeur: Gitarist The Vagary debuteert solo met folky dreampop-single

Vrijdag 17 april gaat de debuutsingle “The Art of Losing” van Summer With Monica in première bij Pinguin Radio.

De eerste single van Summer With Monica, het soloproject van de Amsterdamse muzikant Julien Staartjes (gitarist The Vagary) is een melancholisch maar upbeat nummer met een catchy gitaarpartij en warme vocals. De tekst gaat over tegenslagen overwinnen en opnieuw beginnen.

“The Art of Losing” is geïnspireerd op het gedicht One Art van Elizabeth Bishop:
The art of losing isn’t hard to master;
so many things seem filled with the intent
to be lost that their loss is no disaster

Sound
Beinvloed door o.a. Lou Reed, Mazzy Star en Jackson C. Frank, heeft Summer With Monica een intieme, droomachtige sound en verhalende popliedjes die je mee op reis nemen.

Video
De video van Jeroen van der Poel is opgenomen bij de zoutvelden van Pag, een dorp aan de zonovergoten kust van Kroatië. Vrijdag 17 april gaat de video in première op de website van Pinguin Radio

Album
The Art of Losing is de eerste single van het album dat is opgenomen door en met Bram Kniest (Go Back tot he Zoo, St Tropez) met bijdragen van Robin Berlijn (The Fatal Flowers) en Rosa Ronsdorf (Spill Gold, Blue Crime).

Clipprimeur: Camilla Blue – Loose Sand

Op 17 april lanceert Camilla Blue haar nieuwe single en videoclip Loose Sand. Na ‘When I get home’, die in de Top 40 playlist ‘nieuwe releases’ belandde, en het recente Iced up is Loose Sand de derde single van het album Yellow, dat rond de jaarwisseling uit komt. 

Camilla Blue is de artiestennaam en het alter ego van Joyce Deijnen. Over haar nieuwe single zegt ze: “Loose Sand gaat over verlatingsangst. Soms ben ik bang om verlaten te worden. Ik klamp me dan ergens aan vast, terwijl het in het leven juist gaat om anderen de ruimte te geven. Loose Sand refereert aan het bijbelse verhaal ‘Parabel van de zandkorrels’. Hoe krampachtiger je zand in je hand vasthoudt, hoe sneller het er uit glijdt.”

Joyce licht nader toe: “Ik schreef het nummer op het strand in Bordeaux tijdens een band tournee, na een van mijn heftige paniekaanvallen. Dit heeft mijn kijk op de wereld en mezelf veranderd. Thuisblijven, zoals we nu noodgedwongen met z’n allen doen, geeft je de gelegenheid om aandacht te schenken aan wat hiervoor geen prioriteit leek te zijn. Ook merk ik dat we alsmaar op jacht zijn naar beter en meer… het moet steeds maar goed gaan, je moet altijd maar mooi en stabiel zijn. ‘We absorb too much information’. Doordat je hier bijna noodgedwongen aan meedoet, krijg je onnodig veel stress. En intussen glipt wat je echt dierbaar is weg uit je handen. ’I’ll rather keep all the chairs empty in the end.. instead of having Loose Sand…’.

Multi-artiest

Camilla Blue bracht in 2018 samen met haar band het debuutalbum Blue uit, gevolgd door een live registratie in TivoliVredenburg voor het muziekprogramma Vrije Geluiden. Haar eerste single ‘Don’t turn on the lights’ haalde meer dan 50.000 streams op Spotify en met de opvolger ‘When I get home’, een ode aan haar pleegouders, stond ze in de Top 40 Playlist ‘’Nieuwe Releases’’. Joyce componeert, schrijft teksten, zingt, speelt piano en gitaar, en combineert andere artistieke kwaliteiten zoals schilderen en ‘performen’ met haar muziek. Voor haar nieuwe album ontwerpt ze een variatie aan CD-hoesjes en tasjes om de CD in te bewaren.

Blue en de opvolger Yellow zijn de eerste twee van een reeks van vier albums met kleurenthema’s. Deze vormen samen één ‘Gesamtwerk’. Een serie van vier albums met kleuren als thema. Camilla Blue doet niet aan vaste stijlen en structuren. Voor haar is muziek een expressie van diepe innerlijke emoties en reflecties op de wereld om ons heen. Elke song schetst haar eigen wereld, met een eigen unieke klank en betekenis.

Camilla Blue is één van de geselecteerde toptalenten van Music Hub Brabant. Ze is doorgedrongen tot de halve finale van de Grote Prijs van Nederland, die vanwege de corona crisis is uitgesteld. In het najaar hervat ze de band tour met liveoptredens.

All Time Low – Monsters ft. blackbear

All Time Low released their new single and lyric video for “Monsters” , part of the band’s brand new album “Wake Up, Sunshine” which is out now via Fueled By Ramen.
The group went back to the basics (and the basement) for Wake Up, Sunshine. Throughout 2019, the four musicians—Alex Gaskarth [vocals, guitar], Jack Barakat [guitar, vocals], Zack Merrick [bass, vocals], and Rian Dawson [drums]—congregated together in Nashville at Rian’s studio and at a Palm Springs rental house. Face-to-face, they wrote and recorded the 15-song affair joined by co-writer, producer, and collaborator Zakk Cervini.
 “We got back to how we started,” commented Alex. “It had been a long time since the four of us made a record under one roof. That became a central theme. We’ve been a band for 17 years. Everybody brought something to the table. A lot of what you’re hearing came from those magic moments together.” Jack concurred, “I think we accomplished something special. By putting our four heads together, we were able to make a classic All Time Low album.”

Je eigen huiskamerfestival met Streamit! Festival

In deze tijden van lege popzalen en kale festivalweides, vinden veel artiesten hun weg naar de digitale podia van Instagram, YouTube en Facebook. Met het ruime aanbod aan live streams kun je een aardige line-up samenstellen. Maar wanneer is welke artiest waar te vinden? 

Om overzicht te bieden in het grote aanbod, brengt Streamit! Festival alle live streams samen in één timetable. “Zo kun je zelf de line-up bepalen van je eigen huiskamerfestival,” aldus Jannis van den Heuvel, een van de initiatiefnemers. “Natuurlijk duik je liever in de blokkenschema’s van de echte festivals, maar in deze vreemde tijden moeten we het noodgedwongen even doen met een digitale variant. Dat is Streamit Festival. We hadden het ook wel “De Schrale Troost Streams” kunnen noemen, maar dat klinkt ook niet echt lekker, toch? Laten we, ondanks alles, proberen in de festivalsferen te komen. Plastic bekertje lauw bier erbij en je kunt helemaal los.”

Streamit Festival is een initiatief van Gigit De initiatiefnemers van Streamit! Festival kennen we al van Gigit, de concert-app waarin muziekliefhebbers hun concertervaringen met elkaar delen. “De Gigit-app is natuurlijk eigenlijk niet bedoeld om live streams te delen en te beoordelen, maar in deze bijzondere tijden zijn live streams de enige “live” ervaringen die we hebben. Je kan deze dus ook zeker toevoegen aan je concertgeschiedenis in de app. Maar laten we hopen dat we de live streams gauw weer mogen inruilen voor het echte werk!”

Clipprimeur: Courtney Marie Andrews – Burlap String

Country zangeres Courtney Marie Andrews brengt op 5 juni haar nieuwe studioalbum Old Flowers uit via Loose/Fat Possum. Old Flowers werd geproduceerd met Andrew Sarlo (Bon Iver, Big Thief). De nieuwe single met videoclip Burlap String van Old Flowers gaat vandaag bij ons in première.

Old Flowers werd geschreven nadat haar lange liefdesrelatie over was. Courtney Marie Andrews heeft zich nog niet eerder zo kwetsbaar opgesteld op een album. De tien nummers op het album leiden je langs de verschillende fases; van liefdesverdriet naar eenzaamheid en vervolgens jezelf opnieuw leren vinden.

Andrews zegt over Burlap String:

“More than a decade ago, I would travel from my home in Phoenix, Arizona to a quirky little historic Mexican border town in the southeastern hills of Arizona called Bisbee. In Bisbee, all the musicians play in old saloons, making a small, but honest living off of tip jars. This special place became my haven as an artist. The entire town is ripe with characters and creativity. During my visits there, I befriended a local musician couple, whose moniker was Nowhere Man and a Whiskey Girl. They became my DIY musician mentors, being fifteen years older than me, and showing me it was possible to pay rent off of playing music. I adored them, and we did lots of shows together throughout my early twenties. About five years ago now, they both died unexpectedly within twenty-four hours of each other. Losing them was a devastating blow. They were a large part of the Arizonan community. I still go back to Bisbee often, as it’s where my heart belongs in many ways. During one of my visits a couple years ago, I discovered a special place called Young Blood Hill. It’s a hike to a sacred and rocky peak, littered with catholic influenced memorials, shrines and crosses. It turned out to be a place where many of my personal revelations happened, so naturally I chose to shoot the album cover for Old Flowers there. Unknowingly, while shooting the album cover under the last full moon of the decade, Nowhere Man and a Whiskey Girl’s memorial ended up in many of the press shots. When showing them to someone in town, they remarked how sweet it was that Amy and Derrick made it into those photos. It came as a beautiful gift and surprise, for I was unaware it was their memorial at the time. With that gift, I decided to shoot my music video for ‘Burlap String’ on Young Blood Hill. By the end of the video, I am placing flowers on Derrick and Amy’s memorial, as a way of reckoning with their loss and each loss we grieve throughout our lifetime. Though this song was written for one of the great loves of my own lifetime, I wish to place flowers on heartbreak’s memorial as well.”

Courtney Marie Andrews wordt op Old Flowers bijgestaan door Twain’s Matthew Davidson en Big Thief’s James Krivchenia. Het album werd opgenomen in Sound Space Studio, Los Angeles. Old Flowers is de opvolger van het in 2018 verschenen May Your Kindness Remain.

Op 14 juni speelt Courtney Marie Andrews op Best Kept Secret festival in Hilvarenbeek, als het door gaat..

RVG – Perfect Day

Melbourne’s RVG return with their highly anticipated second album, ‘Feral’. Following their beloved 2017 debut ‘A Quality of Mercy’, RVG perform the tricky alchemy of combining rock’s urgency, punk’s anarchy, and pop’s empathy.

New single ‘Perfect Day’ is the next track from their new album out April 24th on Fire Records.

Directed by Geoffrey O’Connor, the dreamlike and majestic music video sees the band in a snowstorm much like the turmoil at the centre of this song.

“Movies and TV shows set in the snow have always made me feel happy in a way I cannot quite describe, so filming RVG perform their song 500 times in the middle of a snowstorm was a magical experience. I’m forever indebted to these lovely people and their beautiful music for giving me an excuse to buy a snow machine. I don’t know when or why, but I’m sure I will need it again.” Geoff O’Conner

Recorded at Head Gap studios with producer Victor Van Vugt (PJ Harvey, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Beth Orton), this is RVG’s first full-length release in three years and marks the beginning of a new era for the band.

‘Feral’ is a catharsis, a call to arms, and a forthright indictment of contemporary complacency. Throughout this album isolation is incited, but it never feels hopeless: these songs channel the raw energy of despair and frustration into melodies that often feel victorious, perhaps only because they so aptly supply a soundtrack to the end of days.

To Romy, RVG’s lead singer and lyricist, to feel feral is to feel outside of everything.

Vanavond om 23:00 uur Bluestown Music Radio #14

Bluestown Music is een gloednieuwe website voor de liefhebber van alle soorten blues; modern en oud – maar ook met rock, roots en americana.

En daar houden pinguïns wel van. Daarom vanaf nu elke dinsdagavond van 23:00 tot 00:00 uur een uurtje Bluestown Music Radio op Pinguin Radio. Het uur wordt samengesteld door Mr. Blues Himself, Harry Radstake. Oprichter en coördinator van bluestownmusic.nl.

Pinguin Radio presenteert om 22:00 uur Heaven Radio #212

HeavenPinguin Radio en Popmagazine Heaven delen twee belangrijke eigenschappen: een passie voor goede muziek en een volstrekt onafhankelijke opstelling. Dat moest natuurlijk tot een samenwerking leiden

Heaven verzorgt iedere dinsdagavond van 22:00 tot 23:00 een uur lang de muziek op Pinguin Radio. Net als Pinguin heeft Heaven oor voor – bijna – alle popmuziek. In het uurtje radio hoor je muziek uit verschillende genres: (classic)rock, roots, folk, soul, world, jazz en blues.
