Hannah Williams & The Affirmations unleash the new single “I Feel It” taken from the forthcoming album “50 Foot Woman” and the official video.

 

Hannah Williams, the British soul hurricane who sensationally became part of Jay-Z’s chart-topping 4:44 album, unleash the new single “I Feel It” taken soulful new album “50 Foot Woman” which will be released next October 18th. The single is accompanied by an epic new music video directed by Benjamin Dowden.  According to the band ““I Feel It’” “is a song about empathy” – the band says – “It’s about a friend offering emotional support to somebody who suffers with depression. It pays hommage to Canadian-American composer, pianist and writer Galt MacDermot”.

 

Williams turned heads worldwide when the hip-hop superstar sampled her heart-stopping vocals on ‘Late Nights & Heartbreak’ for the title track on his 2017 album. Now Hannah and her exemplary, Bristol-based band the Affirmations deliver a definitive career statement with new album “50 Foot Woman”. The album, produced by Shawn Lee, a respected presence on the funk/soul scene whose credits include Amy Winehouse, Lana Del Rey and Alicia Keys, captures all of the visceral power of the band’s increasingly legendary live performances. Shades of classic Soul and Psychedelic Funk blend uniquely with modern-day flavours on a record destined to set the soul agenda for 2019 and far beyond. “I’ve never been as proud of anything in my entire career” says Hannah.

 

Born in High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire, Williams’ father was a musically gifted minister, and her mother let her join the church choir at the age of six. Hannah could read music before she could properly read words, and when she discovered soul by listening with her mum to Motown and Bill Withers, there was no turning back. Now the world will hear what the cognoscenti have known for a while: that Hannah Williams is the real deal, and sings from her very soul. “I feel like my performance comes from my solar plexus,” she says. “The emotional side of it is so intrinsic; I can’t take it away from what I do.”

Lola Marsh – Echoes

Lola Marsh is een frisse indie-popgroep uit Tel Aviv die aanstekelijke en warme melodieën versmelt. In 2014 brak het duo, dat uit Yael Shoshana Cohen en Gil Landau bestaat, door na een optreden op het invloedrijke Primavera Sound Festival in Barcelona. Daarna volgde de release van een paar nummers die viraal gingen op Spotify en The Hype Machine.

In 2017 verscheen hun debuutalbum Remember Roses en inmiddels wordt gewerkt aan de 2e langspeler die begin 2020 wordt verwacht. Voordat het zover is, hebben ze afgelopen zomer de eerste single Echoes uitgebracht. Een heerlijke spaghetti western soundtrack.

Hierover zeggen ze: “We cut an upbeat tone on this new offering, sending the listener on a dizzying psych-folk journey complete with singer’s honeyed vocals.”

“I know our music goes all over the place,” laughs De Staat vocalist, lyricist and rhythm guitarist Torre Florim. “You don’t even want to know how often we’ve heard from the industry, ‘We can’t place you in any box!’ I’m sorry, but we can’t do anything else – to me, this is exactly what we need to do…”

De Staat are a rock band opening the floodgates to an intoxicating, even dizzying, array of genres, which is not particularly unusual for them. It’s been woven into their DNA since day one.

The massive lead single ‘KITTY KITTY’ couldn’t serve as a better primer for the upcoming album. Not only does the labyrinthine six-minutes and 45-seconds boast a gigantic, bubbling bassline, it also boldly attempts to capture the conflicting arguments transpiring on the global political stage right now. “That song is very much based on when Trump arrived,” explains Torre. “It’s a collection of words and sentences which came into my head during that campaign – it’s about the creation of different groups in society and how they’re completely in their own bubble.”

Through their own brand of rock more and more people are noticing them over the years, which led De Staat to landing some highly coveted support slots including The Rolling Stones in Amsterdam and a run with Muse across Europe with their blockbusting 2016 Drones tour. After this tour impending stardom is not going to their heads and Torre was preoccupied with the idea of De Staat’s new fifth album.

De Staat have many new, bold and diverse songs at their disposal. As for the old lingering criticism that De Staat don’t fit into a box? Torre has a theory on that…
“If we did I think we’d be a boring-ass band,” he smiles. “We’re now at a point where we’re very relaxed because we really know who we are. There’s always something in our music that’s interesting, and if there’s a song you really hate? That’s your bubble, man. To me, that’s a lot more inspiring than something you just find to be OK!”

First envisioned by Torre in 2006 as something of a challenge to himself – before there was a group, there was a one-man project in Nijmegen, Holland. “I was making so much music, all different kinds,” grins Torre. “I just wanted to see if I could make something that sounded like one thing!” Having wrangled said sounds together, that ‘one thing’ would soon become known as De Staat – translated as ‘The State’ – and their 2009 debut, Wait For Evolution. With a line-up completed by lead guitarist Vedran Mircetic, bassist Jop van Summeren, multi-instrumentalist Rocco Hueting and drummer Tim van Delft, De Staat have achieved remarkable things since those fledgling days. Across three more colourful albums, 2011’s Machinery, 2013’s I_Con and 2016’s O, De Staat have established a chameleonic brand of rock that is wholly their own – a band who cite the influence of everyone from Talking Heads, Rihanna, and Nine Inch Nails to Radiohead, Michael Jackson, Run-DMC and Soulwax.

Nieuw album en single voor Beck

Op 22 november brengt zevenvoudig Grammy-winnaar Beck zijn 14de album uit genaamd: Hyperspace. Luister hier naar de nieuwe single Uneventful Days. Hyperspace is de opvolger van Colors (2017).
Hyperspace is het resultaat van Beck’s meest intensieve samenwerkingen tot nu toe. 7 van de 11 tracks – waaronder de single Uneventful Days en Saw Lightning (het laatste o.a. gebruikt in de Beats by Dr. Dre Powerbeats Pro campagne) – zijn geschreven en geproduceerd in samenwerking met Pharrell Williams. Daarnaast hielp Greg Kurstin, met wie Beck vaak samenwerkt, mee aan het nummer See Through. Paul Epworth droeg mee bij aan Star. Het nummer Stratosphere kreeg de hulp van Chris Martin en op de titeltrack Hyperspace horen we de stem van Terrell Hines. Die Waiting is geschreven en geproducet samen met Cole M.G.N. en heeft Sky Ferreira als backing vocals. Verder op het album zijn ook Beck’s vaste muzikanten Jason Falkner, Smokey Hormel en Roger Manning Jr. te horen.

Julia Jacklin – Don’t Know How To Keep Loving You

Julia Jacklin heeft met Crushing een van de beste albums van het jaar gemaakt. Misschien wel het prijsnummer is Don’t Know How To Keep Loving You.

Voor de verandering is Don’t Know How To Keep Loving You ook nog eens representatief voor het album dat tien tranentrekkende (op een goede manier) tracks telt, de een wat sneller dan de ander, maar zonder uitzondering geleefd en geloofwaardig.

Don’t Know How To Keep Loving You doet zowel aan Neil Young als aan Wilco denken, een ballad met het tempo van een traag stromende rivier met op driekwart een gitaarsolo die verder gaat waar Julia’s woorden te kort schieten. Crushing is het tweede album van miss Jacklin die als ze niet op tournee is in Sydney woont. Alwaar ze 28 jaar geleden ter wereld kwam.

Jonathan Jeremiah op tournee met Amsterdam Sinfonietta

De ‘Breder dan klassiek’ nieuwjaarstournee van Amsterdam Sinfonietta, waarin het strijkorkest samen met een artiest van buiten de klassieke wereld uit de comfortzone treedt, is inmiddels een begrip in Nederland.

Voor deze tour werkte Amsterdam Sinfonietta eerder samen met bijvoorbeeld Rufus Wainwright, Typhoon, De Dijk en in de laatste editie (januari 2019) met Blaudzun.

In januari 2020 is het de beurt aan de Britse singer-songwriter Jonathan Jeremiah. Zijn debuutalbum ‘A Solitary Man’ kwam in Nederland binnen op nummer 3 in de Album Top 100 en hij scoorde een hit met de song ‘Happiness’. Met Jules Buckley als arrangeur maakte Jeremiah nog twee albums en met het in 2018 uitgebrachte ‘Good Day’ maakte hij zijn grootste tournee tot nu toe. In januari beklimt hij met Amsterdam Sinfonietta elf Nederlandse podia.

De komende ‘Breder dan klassiek’ editie heeft als thema Europese Romantiek. De focus ligt daarbij op componisten, dichters en singer-songwriters die Jonathan Jeremiah hebben geïnspireerd: Britse componisten als Dowland en Quilter, de singer-songwriters Nick Drake en Sandy Denny, klassieke grootheden als Mahler, Tchaikovsky, Finzi en Schumann en de werken van Goethe en Shakespeare. Samen met Amsterdam Sinfonietta maakt Jeremiah een reis langs klassieke werken als ‘Come away with death’ (Roger Quilter), via iets recentere songs als ‘River Man’ (Nick Drake), naar eigen werk, waarbij ook zijn hit ‘Happiness’ niet zal ontbreken. Amsterdam Sinfonietta schittert met een uitvoering van Frederick Delius’ Aquarelles no.1.

Jonathan Jeremiah
De in Londen geboren Jonathan Jeremiah werd beïnvloed door klassieke singer-songwriters als John Martyn, Scott Walker en Serge Gainsbourg. Zijn authentieke en tijdloze sound combineert gruizige akoestische R&B met volksachtige soulklanken. Op zijn veertiende trad hij voor het eerst op. In 2011 kwam zijn debuutalbum uit, ‘A Solitary Man’, dat in Nederland op nummer 3 in de Album Top 100 binnenkwam, niet veel later de gouden status behaalde en hem een hit met de song ‘Happines’ opleverde. Het merendeel van dat album schreef Jeremiah in zijn vroege twintiger jaren, terwijl hij reisde door de VS.

Na zijn terugkeer naar Londen investeerde Jeremiah in het zelf produceren van zijn nummers. Daarnaast nam hij Jules Buckley, de oprichter van het Heritage Orchestra, in de arm als arrangeur. Twee albums volgden: ‘Gold Dust’ in 2012 en ‘Oh Desire’ in 2015, die Jeremiah definitief onder de aandacht brachten van het grote publiek, in het bijzonder in Europa. Het bracht hem ook andere lof, zoals een telefoontje van James Bond-componist John Barry, die aanbood met hem aan nieuwe nummers te werken. In 2018 bracht Jonathan Jeremiah zijn vierde studioalbum ‘Good Day’ uit, met daarop onder meer de singles ‘Mountain’, ‘Good Day’ en ‘U-bahn (It’s Not Too Late For Us)’. Met dat album maakte hij begin 2019 zijn grootste tournee door Europa tot nu toe.

Amsterdam Sinfonietta
Amsterdam Sinfonietta is in 1988 opgericht en inmiddels is het uitgegroeid tot een dynamisch en virtuoos ensemble dat optreedt over de hele wereld. Het strijkorkest speelt onder leiding van artistiek leider Candida Thompson en wordt geroemd om zijn innovatieve programmering en hechte samenspel. Met de jaarlijkse concertreeks ‘Breder dan klassiek’ gaat het orkest een samenwerking aan met artiesten van buiten de klassieke wereld, waarbij beide partijen uit hun comfortzone stappen. Ek jaar weer mondt dit uit in een spannende kruisbestuiving tussen totaal verschillende muzikale werelden.
