Pinguin Radio Showcase Groningen: Marieke Schenk, Salesmen, Rantsoen

Komt allen, komt allen. 26 april 2024! Koningsnachteditie!

Drie nieuwe Penguin Artists op het podium van De Drie Gezusters in Groningen. Zoals je van ons gewend bent, hebben we weer een leuke selectie gemaakt van drie totaal verschillende acts.

Zorg dus dat je erbij bent, vanaf 20:30 uur ‘s avonds tot de late uurtjes. De entree is zoals altijd gratis en neem je handen mee want er moet geclapt worden! De winnaar van de avond krijgt zoals het hoort een plekje op Pinguin Radio Showcases tijdens ESNS.

Marieke speelt catchy popsongs. Ze maakt muziek om mensen te inspireren, zoals Miss Montreal haar geïnspireerd heeft. Dit doet ze door lekker zichzelf te zijn op het podium. Kortom; door Marieke haar energie is elk optreden er één om niet meer te vergeten.

 


22:00 Salesmen

Salesmen do not just write songs; rather they offer musical odysseys that traverse the annals of rock history. Rooted in the raw energy of classic rock, Salesmen infuse their sound with influences spanning decades, creating a sonic tapestry that echoes the spirit of legendary bands like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and Alice In Chains.

Wat krijg je als je vier mannen met hun instrumenten en wat blikken bier letterlijk opsluit in een muffe repetitieruimte? Juist, RANTSOEN. Oftewel, vier heren uit het hoge noorden met analoge choruspedalen die het jaren ’80 geluid nieuw leven inblazen. Met teksten over ouder worden, nachtelijke escapades en berovingen laten ze weten het leven wel te snappen.

 

Tot vrijdag dus, wij hebben er weer zin in!

Dit zijn voorrondes voor Pinguin Radio Showcases tijdens ESNS in De Drie Gezusters in Groningen in januari 2025!

Om je aan te melden heb je een Pinguin-profiel nodig: ga naar penguinartists.com en registreer je band, kopieer de link naar je openbare profiel en plaats hem hier in het formulier. Niet-geregistreerde bands mogen niet spelen.

Alle stemmen van de Pinguin Radio Showcase in Groningen zijn geteld… 👏

Organisator Bas Barnasconi maakt de winnaar bekend: in Groningen in De Drie Gezusters is er het meest geclapt voor Tailormade. Zij zorgden voor een enthousiaste volle zaal!

Dat betekent dat we het funky vijftal gaan terugzien op Pinguin Radio Showcases 2025 in Groningen tijdens ESNS. Gefeliciteerd! Dat kan zomaar een enorme stap in hun muzikale dromen betekenen.

20:30 The Ax Effect

The Ax Effect! Consisting of drummer/lead vocalist: Mathijs Ansems, guitarist/backing vocalist: Bart Kruijssen and bassist: Harrie van Erp the band has created there own style with a stood-up drumming/singing frontman! The band mixes bits and pieces of hardrock, metal and punkacts from the last three decades of the 20th century and finishes it off with a lumberjack-concept!

‘Tailormade’, made up of 5 talented musicians, knows how to get the crowd going with their amazing repertoire. They specialize in funk and blues, drawing inspiration from awesome artists like Scary Pockets, Cory Wong, Vulfpeck, and Snarky Puppy, while also creating their own original music.

Das Matterhorn is an alternative rock band from Rotterdam. The members are:
Floris Melieste (drummer), Finnley van Wijnen (guitarist and singer), Rowyn van Wijnen (bass-guitarist and producer). Inspired by decades of experimental music and with a proclivity for earworm melodies, Das Matterhorn’s songs have an original and welcoming sound.

Pinguin Radio Showcases draait maar om één ding en dat is het etaleren van nieuwe artiesten. Ook hier in ons Magazine showcasen we telkens een aantal artiesten die je gezien of gemist hebt op het festival tijdens ESNS in De Drie Gezusters.

Alpha Rats – Pinguin Radio Showcases 19 januari – Tikibar

Naast een liefde voor alles wat gruizig en overstuurd klinkt, beschikken de Alpha Rats (voormalig leden van Disturbance, Organisms, wet Boys, The Levi’s, Worgpaal en Spider Rico) over een onuitputtelijke bron materiaal. Herzien en voorzien van een flinke laag low gain en distortion blijken weggestopte ideeën tegenwoordig ongehoorde pareltjes.

Onder de noemer “post-wave”: een combinatie van rauwe punk en de ongepolijste diy mentaliteit van garage beleefd de band haar eerste successen in Den Haag (Sniester, Zwarte Ruiter Barakka Bash).

Cocoa River – Pinguin Radio Showcases 18 januari – Q Factory Stage Front

Cocoa River is een Zaanse band, opgericht in de zomer van 2017. Vijf gedreven muzikanten geboren in de jaren ’90 die de tent graag op zijn kop zetten. Cocoa River staat voor goede muziek en plezier hebben met elkaar. Dit is op het podium goed te zien. Maar zeker ook naast het podium trekken de bandleden graag met elkaar op.

Cocoa River heeft zijn naam te danken aan de Zaan met aan haar oevers de o zo bekende cacaofabrieken. De band laat zich graag inspireren door muzikanten uit de jaren ’80, ’90 en ’00. Invloeden die terug te horen zijn in hun eigen werk zijn: John Mayer, Eric Clapton, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, U2 en Pink Floyd.

The Meadow – Pinguin Radio Showcases 17 januari – Q Factory Stage Back

Warm indie-rock and melancholic ‘folky’ songs, The Meadow combines both crafts in their repertoire.

The Dutch indie band originates from Zwolle, the Netherlands, and was founded at the end of 2021 following a Facebook call to form a new band. It didn’t took long before four musicians first met in the rehearsal room and started working together on their own music. Four strangers turned into four friends. Their passion for writing music and the ambition to become successful with it bound the group together.

Fuzzy Teeth – Pinguin Radio Showcases 18 januari – Q Factory Stage Back

From whisper-soft and fragile to raw and in-your-face. Electronic vibes, combined with electric guitars. Sturdy, then sensitively fragile and acoustic. Lo-fi sounds and bedroom vocals.

Guitarist and songwriter Anthony Koenn releases his own work under the name FUZZY TEETH. Anthony was active in music from an early age. At the age of 15 he toured with, among others, the energetic punk rock bands Forever Saturday and Peach along the Dutch stages.

Statera – Pinguin Radio Showcases 19 januari – Q Factory Stage Back

Formed in late 2022, Statera was invited to play Simplon UP in the beginning of 2023. With not even half of the setlist written, the band worked hard and managed to play a full set within less than six months of its existence.

With a complete setlist and loads of ambition, the band played another fifteen shows in 2023 and in the meantime released their two singles “Slowdrive” and “Regret”.

Bunker – Pinguin Radio Showcases 19 januari – Classic

BUNKER is a modern rock band that is all about making passionate and pure music! With influences from various 90’s and 00’s bands such as Oasis, Nirvana and Arctic Monkeys, BUNKER creates a sound that will keep you on the edge of your seat!

By incorporating their inspirations from previous decades into modern rock, the band has a unique but powerful sound! The young rock band consists of 5 guys who all have the same vision: convincing as many people as possible of their music!

VOZ – Pinguin Radio Showcases 19 januari – Q Factory Stage Back

“Heel eigen stijl… karakteristieke melodische wendingen… eigentijds geluid” schrijft popjournalist Peter Bruyn over VOZ. VOZ is een Nederlandstalige indiepopband uit Haarlem.

De band bouwt met elektrorock en jazz-invloeden voort op de lange traditie van tekst-georiënteerde Nederlandstalige kwaliteitspop, van Frank Boeijen tot Eefje de Visser. VOZ is als live-act ook wel omschreven als ‘The Police meets Steely Dan meets Jan Wolkers.’

Jake W Styles and his Stylebrigade – Pinguin Radio Showcases 17 januari Slachthuis Stage

Ever since he was a kid, he was drawn to the stage. And does his first performance when he’s 8 years old. Since then, he plays many shows in the Netherlands and abroad. In the late nineties his band Beyond93 signs a contract with Columbia Records (Sony Music) and releases the album Stop looking back! Which receives good reviews.

Jake is the singer/guitarist and writes all the songs for the band. Jake plays in various bands after Beyond93 where he writes most of the music for, mostly as lead guitarist. But he always wants to make his own record.

Lowaddicts – Pinguin Radio Showcases 19 januari – Groote Griet 

A powerful, warm electronica-act that moves between house, pop and trip-hop: that’s the best way to describe Lowaddicts. The typical Lowaddicts-ambiance gives you the urge to dance but also the feeling of dreaming away on a warm summer night. Dillan, Maaike and Tessa, all coming from different musical backgrounds, combined their forces, resulting in the Lowaddicts-sound.

The name Lowaddicts is a reference to the yearly Lowlands Festival: A place where all possible forms of music can exist next to each other and where ambiance is the most important factor. Something that also applies to Lowaddicts. In their music, atmosphere is always central and with that they create a place where everything; style, musical background and personality comes together.

Löna – Pinguin Radio Showcases 19 januari – Musicmaker Groote Griet 

LÖNA’s melancholic sound is the perfect Dark & Stormy cocktail. The identical twin sisters mix rough synth sounds with ethereal guitars and a lot of four-to-the-floor beats, to give it a nice kick. Together with heartfelt lyrics about for example the passing of their dad, activism and (LGBT) love make the LÖNA-formula complete. As you listen to their music, you can imagine a cold and dark open Scandinavian landscape, hence their northern-sounding band name which means “valuable” in Swedish. The dutch twins are inspired by northern acts such as Björk, AURORA and Tove Lo.

Salesmen – Pinguin Radio Showcases 18 januari – Tikibar 

Salesmen is a four-piece rock band that originated in The Hague in 2020. They first took the stage in 2022 with a Benelux tour where they promoted their first EP ‘One More, Please‘.

With the help of an overwhelmingly successful crowdfunding campaign, the band released their debut album ‘Cheap Suckers’. The release was celebrated with a nearly sold out show at PAARD in The Hague and was followed by a subsequent Benelux tour.

Zoetwater – Pinguin Radio Showcases 18 januari – SiSo Stage 

Brothers Jelle and Sieb from Zoetwater perform their poetic lyrics and melancholic melodies with harmonies that only brothers can achieve. Their acoustic folk is arranged from minimalist (as a duo) to grandiose with a full band.

In 2023, the duo entered a London studio for the second time with producer Ian Grimble (known for his work with Mumford & Sons, Bear’s Den, Daughter, and Causes) to record their third EP.

No Offense – Pinguin Radio Showcases 17 januari – Classic Stage

“You’ve got the sweet air of trouble in your lungs, and I want to let it all out” schreeuwt Daan in ‘The War and the Coward’. No Offense; scherpe sounds voor wie het horen wil. Daan’s oprechte tekst klinken bovenop een track van post-skate-punk en grungy hardrock.

De Cougars & Cowards single is een voorproefje van de bundeling van dansbare, moshbare tracks die ook op hun debuutalbum zullen samenkomen.

Martin Sillen – Pinguin Radio Showcases 18 januari – Secret Stage

Martin Sillen combineert krachtige grooves en afwisselende harmonieën met invloeden van artiesten als Jeff Buckley en Radiohead. Hun unieke geluid, versterkt door stevige gitaren en catchy koortjes, weet de luisteraar te grijpen met een mix van emoties en melodieën.
De band maakte in 2018 indruk met een plaats in de Nu Of Nooit-finale. In 2019 brachten ze de debuut-EP ‘So Strange’ uit, gevolgd door de tweede EP ‘Not Your Hero’ in 2020. In 2021 stonden de activiteiten van de band even op pauze vanwege de pandemie, maar Martin Sillen maakte in 2022 een comeback met een geprezen concertfilm. Daarnaast presenteerde de band in het najaar van 2023 hun meest succesvolle EP ‘Martin Sillen’ in poppodium Nieuwe Nor.

De Kraaien – Pinguin Radio Showcases vrijdag 19 januari – Classic Stage

Duister, gevaarlijk, uniek, hard, recht door zee en dit alles met een knipoog. Bernd Gansebev en zijn crew verrassen je wederom met splinternieuwe, keiharde maar uber frisse tracks aankomend seizoen.

Harde beats en natuurlijk eigenwijze rauwe Haags teksten behoren tot de vaste ingrediënten van de urban underground formatie maar nu gaan ze net een stapje verder de diepte in. Met de hits ‘Ik vind Je Lekker” en “Pechvogel” zette De Kraaien zich op de kaart.

Inge Lamboo – Pinguin Radio Showcases 18 januari – Secret Stage

Inge Lamboo is a singer and multi-instrumentalist who taught herself to play guitar, piano, drums and bass. She started writing songs at the age of 15. Although Inge released her debut album in April 2023, she’s not been unknown in the online world. She has more than 100k followers on TikTok, she’s been reposted by YUNGBLUD and went viral multiple times over the past few years, in a way only Inge Lamboo can.
