Ela Minus is het alter ego van de in Colombia geboren en opgegroeide muzikante Gabriela Jimeno. Minus woont al geruime tijd in New York. Daar startte ze een studie aan het gerenommeerde Berklee College of Music. Ze drumde ruim tien jaar in een hardcoreband. Daar hoor je niets meer van terug.

Ela Minus is een van de grote danceverrassingen van dit jaar. Ze debuteert met een fonkelend, onderscheidend album dat ze in haar eentje schreef en eigenhandig produceerde. Zo’n studie doe je ook niet voor niets moet ze hebben gedacht.

Acts Of Rebellion is een stoere titel en die staat Minus wel. Met haar charismatische, vastberaden uitstraling en de zorgvuldig geselecteerde afbeeldingen op haar sierlijke lichaam. Niet te veel en op de juiste plekken. Ook daar sijpelt de nodige klasse door.

Minus is eigenlijk dé grote Plus dit jaar op dancegebied. Alle egards op dit podium vorige week voor het onlangs verschenen album van Róisín Murphy, maar nu gaan we toch weer een stap verder in genialiteit. Het geheim zit ‘m vooral in de koelbloedigheid van het songmateriaal. Minus heeft iets ijzigs in haar stem en juist daardoor houd je terstond van haar. Hoe paradoxaal dat ook allemaal mag klinken. Magisch, licht onheilspellend, bedeesd; nog wat typeringen die te binnen schieten.

Acts Of Rebellion is een eigenzinnige, met tien smaakvolle elektronische tracks gevulde plaat. Prikkelende indie synthpop met behoorlijk wat techno-elementen. Waardoor het geregeld verdomde dansbaar wordt. Neem het prikkelende They Told Us It Was Hard, But They Were Wrong. Net zo stuiterend als indringend. Met een tekst complementair aan de onbestemde muzikale zeggingskracht. Minus fluisterzingt en zorgt voor een oorstrelend mysterieus geluid. Opwindend bovendien.

De Spaanstalige technotrack El Cielo No Es De Nadia zou kleur geven aan het nachtleven, zij het dat dat ook volledig op z’n reet ligt. Geef de nacht dan thuis maar extra glans. Improviseer. Nodig drie vrienden uit, koop een stroboscoop en zet het verslavend huppelende Dominique op hoog volume én op repeat. Dit gaat nooit vervelen. “Last night I went to bed at 7:00 a.m. My brain is getting used to the haze. Last time I did this. I had a boyfriend who cooked me dinner. Now all I have is coffee and some liquor. I should probably eat…” Overdag zwaar oké, maar veel lekkerder in het donker. Ela Minus brengt nieuww album ‘Acts of Rebellion’ uit

Colombian musician Ela Minus presents her debut album. Earlier this week she released her final single, ‘Dominique’. It’s the follow-up to a string of singles/videos, ‘El Cielo No Es De Nadie,’ ‘Megapunk,’ and ‘They Told Us It Was Hard, But They Were Wrong.’

‘Dominique’ is Ela’s most diaristic song on the album, documenting her time making the album last year in complete solitude. Minus’ voice is methodical and calm over quick beat sequences and glowing synthesizers: ‘today I woke up at 7PM // my brain feels like it’s going to break // I haven’t seen anyone in a couple of days // I am afraid I forgot how to talk // to anyone else that’s not myself // no quiero dormir hasta que salga el sol // no puedo dormir hasta que salga el sol.’ Despite its lyrics of withdrawal, ‘Dominique’ exemplifies acts of rebellions’ call to embrace the beauty of tiny, every day acts of revolution by carving out a personal space to expand on personal identity and creative endeavors.

Using only hardware to perform, write and record, Ela creates complex electronic music that exudes a warm vibrancy, along with a darker, almost celebratory understanding that our breaths aren’t infinite. Throughout acts of rebellion, you feel Ela’s personality and viewpoint; you sense her presence.

The cover features a photo of Ela with most of her face obscured, but her eyes sharply focused. She is asking us to make contact with her and the people that inhabit our lives. She is suggesting we leave our gadgets behind in favor of flesh-and-blood communities. She’s asking us to think, dance, and love, while she coaxes humanity from her hardware—machines that rattle and whirr alongside her and, in turn, make us feel more alive. Performed, produced and recorded entirely by Ela, acts of rebellion is a call to fight, to live, to be present.
