We Are They – Bring It On

Bring It On is de eerste single van We Are They, een Amerikaanse protestband, waarvan de leden graag anoniem willen blijven. Het gaat om de boodschap en niet om de poppetjes.

Die wens om niet met naam en toenaam in de publiciteit te komen suggereert dat de muzikanten wel eens bekend zouden kunnen zijn. Dat We Are They, zeg maar een soort van supergroep is. Wat ook kan is dat het een slim marketingplan is bedoeld om de nieuwsgierigheid op te wekken. Of ze zijn bang voor bedreigingen, ook dat is niet uit te sluiten. Kortom we weten het niet.

Muzikaal is de actie nu al geslaagd. Bring It On is een no nonsense rocksong met met sterke meidenzang en ruime porties loeiende gitaren. Bring It On van We Are They staat op YouTube en Spotify, je hoort ’em alleen bij ons. En dat wordt blijkbaar zo gewaardeerd dat-ie de nieuwe -1 in de Graadmeter is!

Popwarmer: The Avalanches – The Divine Chord feat. MGMT & Johnny Marr

The Avalanches, ken je ze nog? Rond de eeuwwisseling waren ze ontzettend populair met het album Since I Left You en de gelijkmatige hit. De Australische elektronische groep was een graag geziene gast op de festivals met dj sets.

In 2016 was er opeens een comeback met het album Wildflower. En nu vier jaar later weer, maar niet in de originele bezetting. The Avalanches is tegenwoordig een duo, maar oprichters Robbie Chater en Tony Di Blasi zijn er gelukkig nog steeds bij. De lekkere vette discosound is nog aanwezig en het muzikale netwerk ook.

Want voor het recent uitgebrachte album We Will Always You doet een legio aan relevante acts mee. Pen en papier bij de hand? Karen O (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), Kurt Vile, Denzel Curry, Tricky, Jamie xx, Neneh Cherry, Leon Bridges, Blood Orange bijvoorbeeld. En op single The Divine Chord doet The Avalanches het met MGMT en Johhny Marr (gitarist The Smiths). En die is deze week de Popwarmer op Pinguin Pop!
