60 popmuzikanten geven zich bloot in gesprekken over hun favoriete kunstwerk en de grote thema’s van het leven.

Pop & Art is een interviewbundel waarin zestig bekende Nederlandse en Vlaamse popmuzikanten – jong en oud, met verschillende achtergronden en muziekstijlen – zich bloot geven. De interviews gaan over het belangrijkste kunstwerk uit hun leven en een nummer uit eigen werk dat de soundtrack van dat kunstwerk zou moeten zijn. Dat levert gesprekken op die persoonlijk, kwetsbaar en ontzettend openhartig zijn. Gesprekken die gaan over het leven, en alles wat daarbij hoort.

Bij elk interview is het favoriete kunstwerk van de muzikant te zien. De QR codes bij deze werken leiden naar de soundtrack van de artiest die daarbij hoort. Kijken, lezen, luisteren, dus.

Persoonlijk en kwetsbaar
Kunst is een spiegel. Het laat zien wie we zijn. Zeker bij een favoriet werk is er altijd wel iets dat resoneert: een herinnering, de manier waarop iemand in het leven staat, een gebeurtenis uit het verleden, een diepgeworteld gevoel. Dat levert gesprekken op die persoonlijk, kwetsbaar en ontzettend openhartig zijn. Gesprekken die gaan over het leven, en alles wat daarbij hoort.

‘Door de drugs had ik enorme highs’
“Je weet niet hoe het werkt, maar ik wist: met haar word ik oud”, zegt Jack Poels, zanger van Rowwen Hèze in Pop & Art over de liefde van zijn leven en het kunstwerk dat hij samen met haar kocht. Of de Belgische zanger Guido Belcanto over eenzaamheid: “Ik leef in een zelfgekozen ballingschap, maar de gedachte om alleen te eindigen benauwt me”. En Son Mieux-zanger Camiel Meiresonne: ‘Door de drugs had ik gigantische highs, afgewisseld met enorme lows als ik nuchter was. Op die momenten moest ik dealen met mijn shit.”

Boek release party Paradiso
De boek release party van Pop & Art vindt plaats op zondag 9 oktober in Paradiso, Amsterdam. Die middag vertellen de muzikanten Anne van den Hoogen (zangeres van Rosemary & Garlic), Wouter Planteijdt (zanger en gitarist van Sjako!) en de Belgische singer-songwriter Milo Meskens over hun favoriete kunstwerk en spelen ze een aantal nummers waaronder hun soundtrack van dat werk.

OVER DE AUTEUR
Rick Blom is journalist, historicus en muzikant. Eerder schreef hij voor het Noordhollands Dagblad, Nieuwe Revu en De Groene Amsterdammer. Zijn boek ‘Honger, een geschiedenis van de Eerste Wereldoorlog’ werd in een Engelse vertaling bekroond met zilver bij de toonaangevende Britse Military History Awards en met brons bij de Amerikaanse Foreword Indies Book of the Year Award.

Fuzzy Teeth – Horsefighter

Fuzzy Teeth is the solo project of Anthony Koenn. Born and raised in The Hague, The Netherlands. Despite his age, he has a rich musical background. The style of the songs is diverse and are often auto biographical. Live he is backed up by a energetic and powerful band, all close friends of the songwriter. Besides regular shows, Fuzzy Teeth is touring during Popronde throughout all The Netherlands in fall of 2022. The first release is the single Horsefighter, an energetic and danceable tune. The album is expected in summer 2023.

Lekker muziek maken in je kelder.. Of knallen op een vette stage?

Dromen van mooie optredens en dikke applauzen. Vrienden worden fans. Terwijl je crowdsurfend door het publiek gedragen wordt stromen de contracten binnen… JWZ! Alles begint bij het laten horen van je muziek aan het echte publiek. En als het publiek je te gek vindt en je gaat volgen zijn de eerste stappen gemaakt.

Het Q&A festival op 2 Oktober is zo’n eerste stap

tussen 12:00 en 18:00 uur vindt dit “plug & play” festival plaats in het bruisende muziek hart van Amsterdam: De Q-factory! Je hoeft alleen je gitaar, Keys, bekkens en klopper mee te nemen, inpluggen in de complete backline die er staat, en in een half uur je beste set spelen. Of je leven ervan afhangt. Er zijn 10 stages, er zullen rond de 60 bands spelen. Het is in de kelder van de q-factory. De ruime oefenruimtes zijn omgetoverd tot stages.

Publiek: fans, vrienden, familie en “muziek-professionals”!

Elke band mag (moet) 10 mensen meenemen. Doe dat want dan weet je zeker dat er enthousiaste mensen vooraan staan. Natuurlijk gaat elke band zijn publiek delen met andere bands. Jouw fans zullen ook staan te kijken bij andere bands en vice versa. Er zijn dus ook heel veel collega muzikanten die je kunt horen, zien en ruiken. Ideaal voor het werken aan je netwerk.
Er zijn ook Pro’s. Boekers, managers en organisatoren van festivals en evenementen. Het zal je gebeuren dat er een festival naar je toe komt dat je wil “hebben”!!

Workshops en netwerkmogelijkheden

Het festival speelt zich af in de kelder. In de foyer en nog andere zalen is er de mogelijkheid om te netwerken en workshops te beleven. Musicmaker zal daar zorg voor dragen. In de foyer is er ruimte om rustig te meeten met bookers managers en festivals om te kijken of je samen tot iets kunt komen.

You’re dreaming of beautiful shows and standing ovations. Friends who become fans. Being carried by the crowd while crowd surfing, contracts rolling in… You know, that rock star life!

Everything starts with playing your music for a real audience. And if the public thinks you’re awesome and starts to follow you, the first steps have been made.

The Q&A festival is such a first step

On October 2nd from 12:00 until 18:00 this “plug & play” festival takes place in the bustling music heart of Amsterdam: The Q-factory! The only thing you need to bring are your guitar, keys, cymbals and beater. Plug in the backline (which is completely present), and play your best set in half an hour. Like your life depends on it. There are 10 stages, and there will be around 60 bands playing. It’s in the basement of The Q factory. The spacious practice rooms are transformed into stages.

Audience: fans, friends, family and “music professionals”!

Each band can (must) bring ten people. When you do so, you know that there are enthusiastic people in the front row for sure. As you can imagine, every band will share its audience. Your fans check out the other bands as well and vice versa. So there are also a lot of fellow musicians you can hear, see and smell. It’s a great opportunity to widen your network.

There will be pros too! Bookers, managers and organizers of festivals and events. And who knows, maybe someone offers you a cool spot at their next festival.

Workshops and networking opportunities

The festival takes place in the basement. In the foyer and other rooms, there is the possibility to network and experience workshops. Musicmaker will take care of that. In the foyer, there is room to meet quietly with bookers, managers and festivals to see if you can mean something for eachother.

Kaminski signs with AudioSport Records

On September 16th Kaminski’s debut album My Diary Lied will be released via AudioSport Records, Leeuwarden. ‘A dark and personal manifesto, with an urgency that needs to be heard,’ the label explains. ‘As a label, we focus on the Frisian indie and rock scene and we have a weakness for music that is heartfelt and honest. Kaminski fits right in here’.

The 10-track album was recorded during the corona lockdown in Kaminski’s garage. In the safety of his quarantine, fanning out old photographs, searching for the meaning of childhood anxiety dreams, and exploring perpetual inhibitions that had been characterizing him for years, a clear but gloomy central theme emerged: the struggles of a child growing up in a religious cult. Musically, Kaminski navigates between indie, slowcore, and elements of prog rock.

The album My Diary Lied will be released on vinyl by AudioSport Records, and will also be available via all streaming platforms.

Bayline – Bleeding Hearts

Bleeding Hearts is out now!

The song is a wake-up call to people rioting without a just purpose. The
“rebel without a cause” lines refer to the Dutch riots of ’21, with the
sudden mob mentality scaring a lot of innocent people.

This is the second single of the upcoming EP, which is set to be released September 23rd in collaboration with White Russian records.

The James Brothers have a new release – Judas Iscariot Blues.

Who are the James Brothers? A duo from Cornwall, UK, who have been playing the pubs and clubs for years. In their sets of mainly covers, they introduce self penned songs. These are mainly in a country style and get the crowd going! The James Brothers decided to release them for a bit of fun and that hopefully more people can enjoy their music.

This song focuses on the dilemna some of us face at times, the choice we make and its consequences. It involves betrayal, greed and remorse leading to the ultimate conclusion. The story is based around Judas’s betrayal of Jesus but could resonate with anybody today. It acts as an allegory.

Out on the 19th August on all major platforms.
