Car Seat Headrest – Can’t Cool Me Down 

Bereid je voor op een nieuwe Car Seat Headrest, letterlijk en figuurlijk. Will Toledo, de motor van Car Seat Headrest heeft de elektronica ontdekt. Het nieuwe album van zijn band staat er vol mee.

Will had eerst een band versie opgenomen van ‘Making A Door Less Open’, het eerste album met nieuwe songs in vier jaar. Maar geïnspireerd door zijn elektronisch side project met Car Seat drummer Andrew Katz heeft hij de hele plaat opnieuw opgenomen, maar dan met computers en andersoortige elektronica. De uiteindelijke release telt tracks uit beide sessies, maar het karakter van de plaat zal digitaal zijn.

Dat klinkt radicaler dan het in werkelijkheid is. Tenminste als nieuwe single Can’t Cool Me Down de lading dekt. Het is in ieder geval geen EDM of synthipop wat Car Seat ons voorschotelt. De beat komt weliswaar uit een doosje, de gitaren zijn door een computer gehaald en keyboards domineren het arrangement. Maar alles staat in dienst van de stem. Met zijn naar een climax toewerkende herhalingen is de song is ook puur Car Seat Headrest.  Toledo zingt niks minder dan geweldig met een serie uithalen waar John Lennon trots op zou zijn. 

De Bandcamp ster van weleer is weliswaar ver te zoeken, maar wordt geen moment gemist. ‘Making A Door Less Open’ verschijnt op 1 mei.

Chef’Special is terug met nieuw album Unfold

Chef’Special presenteert vandaag hun nieuwe album, Unfold. De langspeelplaat is de opvolger van het met platina en een Edison bekroonde Amigo uit 2017. Op dit album staat ook de nieuwe single Maybe This Is Love! 

Niet alleen start de band later deze maand aan een Europese tour met ook Nederlandse Nederlandse club- en festivalshows, maar ze sluiten het jaar in stijl af met shows in AFAS Live in Amsterdam, Ahoy (RTM Stage) in Rotterdam en het Klokgebouw in Eindhoven. Tickets voor deze shows zijn hier te koop.
Voor het tien tracks tellende album Unfold, dat geproduceerd is door gitarist Guido Joseph, keerde Chef’Special terug naar thuisbasis Haarlem. Zelfreflectie is het thema, vooruitkijken en verbinden zijn het motto op het vierde Chef’Special-album.

Door het album ditmaal zelf te produceren is het gelukt om zowel tekstueel als muzikaal een heel persoonlijk album te maken. Afgelopen januari kwam de eerste single Trouble uit van het nieuwe album. Deze kwam in Nederland meteen binnen op #10 in de Airplay top 200, en werd verkozen tot zowel Megahit op 3FM als Topsong op Radio 2. Maar niet alleen in Nederland stond de track op de radar. Op de releasedag stond deze in maar liefst 24 New Music Friday playlists van Spotify, is Trouble meerdere malen gedraaid op BBC Radio 2 in de UK en stond in de Airplay Top 200 in Duitsland.
Chef’Special scoorde eerder al hits met nummers als het met goud bekroonde Amigo, de platina single Nicotine en de triple platina klassieker In Your Arms. De laatste stond meer dan een jaar in de Nederlandse singles top 100 en is samen met de andere Chef’Special-hits nog altijd goed voor miljoenen streams op Spotify. Dit jaar speelt de band op festivals als Pinkpop, Zwarte Cross en Concert at Sea.

Jehnny Beth – Flower

Jehnny Beth, bekend als de charismatische frontvrouw en co-writer van de Britse postrock band Savages, heeft onlangs haar solo debuutalbum To Love Is To Live aangekondigd.

Deze plaat verschijnt op 8 mei en hiervoor heeft de in Engeland woonachtige Française samengewerkt met producers Flood, Atticius Ross en Johnny Hostile.

Ook zijn er gastbijdrages van Romy Madly (The xx), Joe Talbot (IDLES) en acteur Cillian Murphy (o.a. Peaky Blinders).

Hockey Dad – Itch

Na Soccer Mom is er nu ook Hockey Dad. De band komt uit de surf scene van New South Wales in Australië, maar te horen is dat niet. Tenminste niet op Itch.

Itch is een variatie op het thema Creep. De nieuwe single van Hockey Dad is een groots en meeslepend nummer dat zeker in het begin aan de classic van Radiohead doet denken. Is dat een probleem? Misschien voor de advocaten van Yorke en co, maar niet voor luchtgitaristen en liefhebbers van aanstekerballads.

Er zijn twee Hockey Dads, Zach Stephenson en Billy Flemming. Het duo begon in 2013. Samen spelen doen de jeugdvrienden al veel langer. Hockey Dad heeft twee albums uit, de release van Itch kondigt de komst van een derde aan. Die gaat Brain Candy heten en eind mei uitkomen. Itch zou kunnen duiden op een nieuwe sound, minder fuzzy meer classic rock, maar dat is speculeren. Zach en Billy hebben eerder bewezen niet aan voorspelbaarheid te doen.

Zes – Alright

His first single of the year, ‘Dive’, already showcased Zes opening up more than we were used to. With ‘Alright’, he is stepping up. Having been in a relationship for a while where he spent most of his energy helping out his partner in overcoming her troubles and making her feel better, Zes found himself unable to open up about his own fears and doubts and ultimately not being able to be the best version of himself. In ‘Alright’, Zes evaluates that situation and stares right into the eyes of the inner demon that influenced him.

 

Opening with a beautiful guitar strum and Zes’ calming voice while still containing the unique electronic sounds we know him for, ‘Alright’ has an increased indie sound that once again showcases Zes developing on not only a personal but on a musical level as well. The song is about getting to know your inner demons and doubts, facing them and ultimately telling them, it’s alright. It’s about accepting them and thereby taking ownership of your negative emotions, your negative behaviour and the painful memories they come with.

 

To Zes, ‘Alright’ is the second essential part to a continuous flow of self-development, he describes:

“There’s always new thought- and behavioural patterns emerging, some of them come from the heart, some of them come from the mind. ‘Alright’ to me is about acknowledging the pain in my heart, the judgement from my mind about that pain, and taking care of myself in creating a sense of ownership about my behaviour and feelings.”

 

‘Alright’ is Zes’ second song of the full EP he will be releasing on bitbird later in 2020.

Black Lips – Get It On Time

Following the release of acclaimed new album ‘Sing In A World That’s Falling Apart’, Black Lips release decadent new video for ‘Get It On Time’ directed by renowned LA filmmaker and rock photographer David Black.

An unfinished long-lost Velvet Underground song that saw Oakley Munson obsessed for years, ‘Get It On Time’ sees the Lips drummer pen the remainder of the song with the blessing of John Cale.

“The first encounter I had with this song was at the Warhol museum in Pittsburgh in 99’. It was on a bootleg recording of the Velvets at the factory. Then I hear one song I’ve never heard. As soon as I’m getting into it I hear Lou Reed yell “stop!” And that’s it. They cut it off and move onto the next song never to be done again.  I searched for years for this song and finally found it. The song was unfinished, thrown away and that made it mysterious to me. One night I decided to finish the song, with Lou Reed’s help. I went into an empty room, lit some candles, and wrote the first words down. Even though I still don’t know what it’s about it has the same mesmerizing sadness and Zumi ‘s singing is really iconic. It only took one pass in the studio and we had it.” Oakley Munson

Shot in Los Angeles at Goya Studios and Sunset Sound Studios, on both 16mm film as well as on repurposed broadcast TV cameras recovered from Tammy Faye Bakker’s old television studio.

“Ten years ago, I drove to a small town in central Florida to purchase the remains of a Tammy Faye Baker television network. The equipment was in an old swampy garage inhabited by snakes and mould. I kept the cameras and studio equipment since then, but it went unused. 

Zumi and I have been friends and collaborators since we were kids and ‘Get It On Time’ seemed the perfect song to resurrect Tammy Faye’s studio. The video moves between two worlds of performance and document, ultimately blurring the boundary between the two.” David Black

Black Lips continue to tour their new album across the US through March before heading to Europe again this summer. Festival dates include SXSW and Primavera.

Glass Animals – Your Love (Déja Vu)

Glass Animals is inmiddels zo populair dat we serieus rekening hielden met de mogelijkheid dat de band voor het grote geld zou gaan. Succes corrumpeert namelijk, want smaakt naar meer en meer.

We zijn dan ook blij te kunnen vermelden dat onze vrees niet terecht was. Glass Animals is lekker indie gebleven. Het intro zet je even op het verkeerde been, want klinkt als een sample van The Day Before You Came van Abba (mooi nummer overigens). Vervolgens ontvouwt zich een spannend en indringend nummer vol intrigerende details, geweldige soundjes en speelse effecten. Opvallend is ook dat er niks retro’s is aan Your Love  ondanks de toevoegsel Deja Vu. Your Love is state of the art elektropop.

Over een nieuw album nog geen woord. Wel gaat Glass Animals weer de ban op.

Honeymoan – Too Much

Schizofreen is wat kras uitgedrukt, maar soms lijkt het wel of Honeymoan twee inborsten heeft. De een is funky, de ander rocky. De band is op zijn best als beide helften naadloos in elkaar overvloeien. Zoals op Too Much.

De nieuwe single staat net als Weirdo en Still Here op de nieuwe EP, maar steekt er naar onze onbescheiden mening toren hoog boven uit. Too Much heeft een funky basje, zware gitaren en zangeres in de rol van verleidster. Het zal niet verbazen als er binnenkort een single edit van het nummer gaat uitkomen, want halverwege zit er een spacey intermezzo dat radiotechnisch beschouwd makkelijk kan worden gemist. Voor ons indie-anen is dat juist de kers op de taart. Too Much laat ook horen dat Honeymoan ook steeds beter wordt, de uitvoering straalt zelfvertrouwen uit en de songs zelfs is niks minder dan hitgevoelig. Al na twee EP’s dit niveau halen is een gevalletje petje af.

Emil Landman herboren op nieuwe single Just Tell Him It’s Over

Singer-songwriter Emil Landman is terug met een gloednieuwe single. Na de release van zijn meest recente studioalbum ‘Vinter / / Sommer’ uit 2019, vertrok Emil naar New York om inspiratie op te doen uit zijn nieuwe omgeving. Dat resulteerde in dit dromerige nieuwe nummer ‘Just Tell Him It’s Over’. Naast de single kwam ook de bijbehorende videoclip uit; een bizarre tijdspanne waarvoor Emil acht uur lang op een kruk heeft gezeten.

Na acht jaar lang reizen, optreden en muziek schrijven heeft Landman uiteindelijk zijn creatieve haven gevonden in Brooklyn, New York. Na jarenlang op pad te zijn geweest reflecteert hij zijn zoektocht naar schoonheid, avontuur, geluk en het succes van zijn muziek. Hij had het behoorlijk moeilijk met het beantwoorden van de vragen over de betekenis van het geheel. Emil: “Als je succes hebt, kun je dat ook verliezen. Wat stelt het inhoudelijk eigenlijk voor zodra dat voorbij is? En als het al iets inhoud, wie geeft daar iets om?”

‘Just Tell Him It’s Over’ is een minimalistisch piano liedje, de diepe bas en zware synths representeren de stemmingen die Emil in Brooklyn had. Tekstueel gaat het over het los laten van mensen die je niet nodig hebt in je leven. ‘Just Tell Him It’s Over’ zet de toon voor de compleet nieuwe sound van Emil Landman.

De video van ‘Just Tell Him It’s Over’ is een acht uur durende tijdspanne waarbij Landman voor de gehele tijd op een barkruk moest zitten. Elke 20 seconden werd er een foto genomen van zijn gezicht; met als doel de kijker het gevoel te geven vast te zitten in een onaangename situatie. Acht uur lang kon hij geen kant op, terwijl de camera ondertussen foto’s bleef schieten.
