Hanni El Khatib neemt als Amerikaan met Palestijns en Filipijns bloed diverse invloeden mee wanneer hij zijn liedjes componeert. Die zijn divers en waaieren uit van disco en r&b tot rock-‘n-roll en garagerock. Dat horen we al sinds zijn debuut Will The Guns Come Out, dat negen jaar terug verscheen. El Khatib doet wat hij wil. Dat is geregeld verrassend.

Flight vertelt het verhaal van een man die zichzelf enigszins kwijt raakte de afgelopen jaren. Misschien wel een paar tatoeages te veel liet zetten. Hij overleefde een zwaar auto-ongeluk. We kennen de gebruikelijke cyclus van vele muzikanten; ze maken een album en toeren ermee de volgende 18 maanden. Plots merkte El Khatib dat hij in de war was, door depressies en angst. Wat ooit een blijmakende, creatieve uitlaatklep was, voelde opeens als een baan. Dat overviel ‘m. Die routine. Dus stopte hij met drinken, hij stopte met toeren en liet voor een bepaalde tijd de studio ook links liggen. Maar hij deed wel inspiratie op in de periode sinds 2017, toen het knallende, hard rockende Savage Times verscheen. Een wereldplaat met negentien songs die werkelijk uitpuilt van de hoogtepunten.

Op Flight ‘slechts’ dertien nummers en het album rockt wat minder dan zijn voorganger. Hanni El Khatib plaatst bruggen tussen garagerock en hiphop en leeft zich uit met soul, blues en psychedelica. Dertien nummers dus, stuk voor stuk in één woord samengevat. Titels zijn onder andere Colors, Stressy, Room, How en Dumb.

Hoewel de plaat minder opwindend is dan het sublieme Savage Times valt er meer dan genoeg te genieten. El Khatib is wat recalcitranter, heeft zichzelf nog wat minder conventies opgelegd en laat vooral horen welk een begenadigd muzikant én zanger hij is. Met die stem kan hij werkelijk alle kanten op en hij doet dan dan ook.

Flight rammelt en wringt en is bij vlagen onnavolgbaar. Het werd geproduceerd door Leon Michels, die eerder samenwerkte met onder anderen Mark Ronson en Eminem. Wie aandachtig luistert, hoort dat wel. Pieter Visscher

Hanni El Khatib – Dumb

Hanni El Khatib shares a new single from his upcoming fifth full-length, FLIGHT out May 15th via Innovative Leisure. “DUMB” finds Hanni striking a midpoint between doo-wop and a post-modern Ennio Morricone Spaghetti Western score. The track is the third single to be released from FLIGHT, following “ALIVE” and “STRESSY,” and arrives after his Blogothèque Stay Away Show last Friday where he played a mix of old and new tracks.

FLIGHT is the most complete embodiment of who Hanni El Khatib is as an artist. Produced by Leon Michels (El Michels Affair, Travis Scott, Mark Ronson, Lana Del Rey), the album is a record both dense and intricate yet direct and spontaneous. It is garage rock, it is hip-hop, it is soul, it is blues, it is psychedelic, but more than anything, FLIGHT is a brilliant Hanni El Khatib record that taps into the adolescent spirit of creation that first stirred him to make songs in the first place.

FLIGHT follows 2017’s Savage Times and his releases with Frank Leone (“Solid Gold” and “Crown”), his song with LA disco-not-disco duo De Lux (“Power Struggle), two songs with first-generation Mexican-American singer/songwriter Rudy De Anda (“Plastered Beach” and “Jealous Guy”), and LA duo Pinky Pinky’s raw and exhilarating debut album Turkey Dinner, which El Khatib co-produced.

Hanni El Khatib – ALIVE

Today, Hanni El Khatib announces his new album Flight. Out May 15th via Innovative Leisure, the album is the artist’s fifth full-length and the most complete embodiment of who he is as an artist. Produced by Leon Michels (El Michels Affair, Travis Scott, Mark Ronson, Lana Del Rey), the album is a record both dense and intricate yet direct and spontaneous. It is garage rock, it is hip-hop, it is soul, it is blues, it is psychedelic, but more than anything, Flight is a brilliant Hanni El Khatib record that taps into the adolescent spirit of creation that first stirred him to make songs in the first place.

Hanni El Khatib is also sharing a new song and video. “ALIVE” is a levitative groove with a narcotic jazz piano riff built atop a bruised but euphoric vocal that states “I can’t believe I survived.” The track is the second taste of the album following “STRESSY,” which came with a Daniel Pappas-directed video.

Speaking on the inspiration behind “ALIVE,” Hanni says: “Last April I was in a pretty serious car accident. Our vehicle was rear ended at high speed leaving the car crumpled up and flipped over. Miraculously we were all able to have come out relatively unscathed with only a few minor injuries. It was definitely a close call. Even the paramedics and police officers on site were in shock that we were all standing there given the severity of the crash. The whole experience gave me some some much needed perspective on life. I knew I wanted to touch on that somehow on this record. When the instrumental came together for the track it immediately felt like the perfect backdrop for this story.”

Hanni El Khatib – Stressy

Verandering van spijs doet rocken. Nu is Hanni El Khatib nooit voor een gat te vangen geweest, maar met Stessy betreedt hij wel heel nieuw terrein.

Het eerst wat opvalt is wat er niet is, gitaar. Met zijn dikke drums, dreigende elektronica en echoënde zang klinkt Stressy als een elektronische rockabilly track. Soms wordt de spanning onderbroken door een zoet a capella koortje waarna het tempo gelijk weer wordt opgepikt. De productie is clean en close en eigentijds.

Stressy lijkt vooral bedoeld om te laten horen dat Hanni El Khatib nog levend en wel is en bezig met de voorbereidingen van de release van de opvolger van Savage Times uit 2017.
