Popwarmer: Picture Parlour – Norwegian Wood

Je moet maar durven om een nummer uit te brengen met de zelfde titel als een van de mooiste Beatle liedjes. Lef heeft Katherine Parlour, frontvrouw van het Britse Picture Parlour dus wel, een dijk van een stem ook, en met hun debuutsingle ook nog eens een potentiële hit in handen.

De losse delen van Norwegian Wood heb je wel eens eerder gehoord. Katherine’stem heeft op deze power ballad het timbre en de vibrato van Stevie Nicks, de gitaarfill ruikt naar Teen Spirit en ook de solo is alles behalve verrassend. De som der delen is echter een groots geheel.  een veel belovend begin.

Bombay Bicycle Club – My Big Day

Bombay Bicycle Club heeft zijn wilde haren verloren, drie van de vier leden hebben nog zo maar weinig haar dat ze hun hoofd maar helemaal kaal hebben geschoren, maar gelukkig nog niet hun streken.

Nieuwe single My Big Day herinnert ons er aan dat het kwartet uit Londen een  eigen plek heeft veroverd in het indielandschap met slimme, cliché arme en toch toegankelijke songs. My Big Day ligt in het verlengde van het oudere werk, maar onderscheidt zich middels een extra laagje elektronica.

My Big Day is de titeltrack van BBC album 6 dat wederom werd geproduceerd door zanger/gitarist Jack Steadman, en contributies bevat van o.a. Damon Albarn en Nilüfer Yanya. Nu we toch met namen aan het strooien zijn, de mix van My Big Day is van van zijn werk voor MGMT en HAIM bekende Davi Fridman en de clip is geregisseerd door Jon Higgs van Everything Everything en Kit Monteith van Foals.

Het album verschijnt op 20 oktober. BBC staat op 27 en 28 november in de Melkweg.

Nocturnal Chronicles: Nachtwaker’s Ethereal Blend of Genres

What began as a conceptual idea between two friends has evolved into a serious project with a unique sound over the last six years: Nachtwaker. With a passion for dreamy yet bombastic music and drawing inspiration from European medieval folklore for their lyrics, Nachtwaker delivers a distinctive blend of 80s new wave, 90s shoegaze, doom, and progressive and psychedelic rock.

The concept of Nachtwaker emerged six years ago and gradually took shape in the following years. The passing of a close friend and fellow musician from a former band, two years ago, prompted the members of Nachtwaker to approach the project more seriously and further develop it. It became a part of the grieving process, and this emotional journey has imbued Nachtwaker’s music with even greater strength.

For the lyrics of their songs, Nachtwaker draws much inspiration from ancient tales and medieval folklore, and their band name reflects this connection. The Nachtwaker, or “Night Watcher,” was the one who extinguished the lanterns in the city at night and reignited them in the morning, all while keeping an eye on the town in the darkness. This encapsulates precisely what Nachtwaker does: they create dark music but also strive to bring light into the darkness, offering solace and acting as an emotional beacon during somber times.

In their live performances, Nachtwaker takes the stage with a 7-piece band to fully convey the layers of their music, creating a wall of sound that is as grandiose as possible and captivating the audience to the maximum.

The members of Nachtwaker are no strangers to the Dutch music scene. They have previously played in bands such as TWINS, Nowhere Near, Rogue Minor, and Karmic Seeds. They have performed at notable venues like TivoliVredenburg and won the Utrecht Popprijs 2018 while also being semi-finalists in the Grote Prijs van Nederland. With Nachtwaker, they are ready for the next big step, adding a new chapter to their musical careers.

In the coming period, Nachtwaker aims to focus on releasing their first three singles, followed by their debut EP, titled “1374.” Their wishlist includes touring various music venues and festivals, with medium-sized stages across the country as their main objective. The groundwork for a second EP has already been laid, and with this material in hand, Nachtwaker plans to release a follow-up EP in 2024.

Julia Jacklin – Shivers

‘I’ve Been Contemplating Suicide’, het zijn de eerste woorden van Shiver, de nieuwe single van Julia Jacklin. Ze schreef het nummer niet zelf al had dat makkelijk gekund. Ook haar eigen songs gaan vaak over de diepere zielenroerselen die een denkend mens kunnen treffen.

De nieuwe single van de Australische singer-songwriter is een cover van een nummer dat Rowland S. Howard schreef voor The Boys Next Door, een punkband waaruit niet veel later The Birthday party zou ontstaan, de band van de weledele Nick Cave. Howard schreef Shivers toen hij 16 was, Cave 21 toen hij het zong.

Shivers is iets van een standard geworden in punk/indie kringen met coverversies van o.a. Divine Fits, een supergroep met o.a. Britt Daniels van Spoon en Sam Brown van New Bomb Turks. Ook Courtney Barnes nam een versie op met Jack White als producer. Shivers is overigens niet zo dramatisch als de beginzin doet vermoeden. Wat Julia in de song aantrok was de puberale pathetiek van de tekst die om die reden ook wel iets grappigs heeft.

Het was een van de eerste songs die ze leerde spelen op gitaar en heeft jarenlang op haar setlist gestaan. Haar nieuwe interpretatie heeft een vol bandarrangement dan niet niet lijkt op Sweet Jane van the Velvets en Be My Baby van The Ronettes/Phil Spector.

LEAP – Exit Signs

LEAP is de nieuwe band van Jack Balfour Scott die eerder de kust onveilig maakte met The Mispers. Die band is nooit echt van de grond gekomen, voor LEAP lijkt er een zonniger toekomst weggelegd.

De band opereert in de schemerzone tussen indie en de wat hardere rock. Net zo belangrijk als de alom aanwezige gitaren is Scott’s lenige en expressieve zang, die op nieuwe single Exit Signs wel wat aan die van Bono doet denken, met die aantekening dat Scott veel makkelijker bij de hoge noten kan.

Exit Signs is het 10e nummer van LEAP. Zet ze in een playlist en je hebt een album. Aan de lege speellijst van de band menen we te mogen opmaken dat ze druk bezig zijn met de opname van een officieel debuutalbum. Maar dat kan ook wishful thing zijn. Dat de naam LEAP nog wel vaker langs zal komen is dat niet.

The Smile – Bending Hectic

Wat de reden ook moge zijn voor Thom Yorke en Jonny Greenwood om zich af te splitsen van Radiohead, het is in ieder geval geen muzikale. Bending Hectic is het meest Radiohead-eske nummer van The Smile to nu toe, en ook zeker niet het eerste dat best op een album van de hoofdband had gepast.

Acht minuten duurt het epos, verdeeld in een stemmig eerste en een corpulent tweede deel. De twee delen zijn aan elkaar verbonden met een orkestraal intermezzo dat sterk doet denken aan het slot van A Day In The Life van The Beatles.

Het nummer is niet nieuw nieuw, The Smile debuteerde Bending Hectic vorig jaar tijdens hun optreden op het Montreux Jazz Festival. Als introductie zei Thom toen dat ze het nummer een half uur voor het optreden hadden geschreven. De opname vond uiteindelijk begin dit jaar plaats in de Abbey Road studio o.l.v. Radiohead veteraan Sam Petts Davis.

BIG SPECIAL – THIS HERE AIN”T WATER 

Geen wonder dat BIG SPECIAL hun naam in hoofdletters schrijft. Alles aan BIG SPECIAL is groots, hun sound, hun ambitie en niet op de laatste plaats de hitpotentie van THIS HERE AIN”T WATER.

BIG SPECIAL is een duo, Joe Hicklin zingt, rapt en schrijft de teksten, Callum Molonet drumt en tekent voor de muziek. De stijl van BIG SPECIAL heeft elementen van zowel rap als postpunk en een typisch Britse ‘working class’ ethos. Naaste verwanten zijn Sleaford Mods en Fontaines D.C. Hicklin zingt uit volle, getatoeëerde borst met het vuur en de overtuiging van een blues of gospelzanger. Of hij dit een optreden lang volhoudt valt te bezien, maar is van later zorg.

Het duo komt uit het deel van Engeland dat The Black Country wordt genoemd, een steenkoolrijk en al vroeg geïndustrialiseerde gebied tussen Birmingham en Wolverhampton. In april verscheen in eigen beheer een eerste EP, maar die is weer terug getrokken, waarschijnlijk voor een herlancering met meer tam tam door een ‘echte’ platenmaatschappij. Nu staan er twee songs online, het eveneens niet te versmaden SHITHOUSE en met misschien net even betere THIS HERE AIN”T WATER. Op basis van die twee nummers durven we de bewering aan dat BIG SPECIAL wel eens heel BIG kan gaan worden.

The Stone Souls – All I Want

We have arrived at a new chapter of the musical journey of The Stone Souls: together with their traveling companions they will make a short movie! The new single “All I Want” is the first track from “Splinter”, their upcoming Original Soundtrack EP. Big Led Zeppelin style drums, accompanied by The Stone Souls’ classic dobro slide guitar, immediately set the mood. On “All I Want” Theodor provides the vocals.

The Song
‘All I Want’ is a rocksong about trauma: breaking into a million pieces, like glass smashed on the floor. Musically influenced by both Jack White and Jimmy Page but also All Them Witches, Queens of the Stone Age and 16 Horsepower.

Devendra Banhart – Twin

Twin is niet de spetterende comeback die we hadden gehoopt van Devendra Banhart. Maar na een aanvankelijk teleurstelling blijkt er toch genoeg te genieten van de eerste release van de muzikale mysticus in dit decennium.

Collega singer-songwriter Cate Le Bon produceerde de nocturnale synthesizer ballade die wel iets weg heeft van (de latere) Roxy Music. Heel veel gebeurt er niet in Twins en wat er gebeurt wordt vaak herhaald. Dat repetitieve blijkt echter -zeker na een paar draaibeurten- een hypnotiserend effect te hebben. De opvolger van Banhart’s mooie Ma album heet Flying Wig en moet in september gaan uitkomen.

Eind november, de 28ste om precies te zijn staat hij in de Paradiso.
