Caroline Benelux is een muzieklabel dat zich grotendeels richt op indie en alternatieve muziek. Het jonge enthousiaste Benelux team is onderdeel van Caroline International dat kantoren heeft over de hele wereld. Caroline is een revival van het in 1973 opgerichte Caroline Label, dat oorspronkelijk door Richard Branson werd opgericht om platen uit te brengen binnen zijn eigen muzikale passie: alternatieve prog-rock. Het huidige label richt zich op alles wat goed en credible is in de wereld van de indie muziek: St. Vincent, Bear’s Den, Tame Impala, Childish Gambino, Nick Mulvey, Thurston Moore, The Amazons en Nederlandse bands als Orange Skyline, PAUW, De Staat, Chef’Special & many more.

Dansende Beren Radio, je wekelijkse uurtje nieuwe muziek waar zelfs beren van gaan dansen. En pinguïns. Ik zag twee beren samen dansen! Dansende Beren is het wekelijks uurtje nieuwe muziektips aangeboden door de mannen en vrouwen van dansendeberen.be.

Dansende Beren is een Belgische muzieksite. Populair en met smaak.  Geen specifieke voorkeur voor een bepaald genre, maar muziek waar zelfs beren op dansen, en zoals we allemaal weten hebben beren geen specifieke voorkeur. De beren proberen de belangrijkste nieuwe muzikale ontdekkingen of gewoon leuke nummers te posten. En die hoor je in Dansende Beren Radio terug.

Ik ben echt de laatste die ontkent dat ik een vreemd niesje over me heb. Al ver voor die hinderlijke coronatoestanden gaat dat al jarenlang van waxahatchéé! Achter die uitroepgaat Katie Crutchfield ook schuil inderdaad. Zo zit het leven vol met toevalligheden.

Crutchfield is sinds haar debuut American Weekend onder haar werknaam Waxahatchee erg productief. Want die plaat verscheen in 2012 en Saint Cloud is inmiddels de vijfde worp. Haar mooiste bovendien. Een plaat waarmee ze haar alcoholverslaving definitief van zich af wil schudden. Dat is vooralsnog gelukt, want Katie drinkt zelfs helemaal niet meer. Afscheid nemen, ellende van je af zingen, overpeinzingen; het levert vaak de mooiste liedjes op. Die mestvaalt opnieuw. Waxahatchee is natuurlijk geen uitroep; Crutchfield heeft zich vernoemd naar Waxahatchee Creek, waar ze opgroeide, in Alabama.

Saint Cloud is gevuld met een elftal songs waar het vakmanschap vanaf druipt. Folk, americana en country worden bedekt door een indielaagje dat elk nummer van extra weelderigheid voorziet. Ongetwijfeld heeft producer Brad Cook (onder anderen Whitney, Bruce Hornsby en Bon Iver) daar een rol in gespeeld. Niettemin is het met name de urgentie van de songs, het stemgeluid van Crutchfield, dat met het jaar fraaier wordt, én, met name, de schoonheid van de melodieën die van Saint Cloud een klein meesterwerkje maken. Crutchfield schuurt her en der tegen het stemgeluid van Melanie aan, ja zij van Woodstock. Nog immer actief. Scoorde hits met Look What They’ve Done To My Song en Beautiful People. Ook muzikaal zijn de raakvlakken aanwezig.

Crutchfield heeft zich laten ontvallen dat ze er moeite mee heeft zonder alcohol liedjes te schrijven en op Saint Cloud rekent ze dus af met die gedachte. De schoonheid van de nummers is enorm, al komt al die niet na één draaibeurt al bovendrijven. “If we make pleasant conversation, I hope you can’t see what’s burning in me”, zingt Crutchfield in Arkadelphia, waarmee ze aangeeft er nog niet te zijn. Maar je hoort aan alles dat ze op de juiste weg is. Saint Cloud is de ultieme quarantaineplaat. Beluister het album aandachtig, draaibeurt na draaibeurt, en voor je het weet wil je helemaal niet meer naar buiten. Pieter Visscher

Vanavond om 18:00 uur Please Don’t Stop The Music Radio #6

Nu COVID-19 er zeker tot 1 juni voor zorgt dat alle concerten en festivals voor de komende tijd worden afgezegd of verplaatst, worden artiesten meer en meer geconfronteerd met de negatieve financiële gevolgen die dit met zich meebrengt. Met andere woorden: Er worden grote verliezen geleden en de live-industrie is in gevaar. 

Artiesten steken veel tijd, moeite en geld in het maken van nieuwe muziek, en ze moeten vaak grote investeringen doen voordat ze de bandbus of het vliegtuig instappen. Die kosten hoop je als artiest terug te verdienen met het geven van optredens en de verkoop van merchandise. Maar met de onzekere vooruitzichten komen artiesten meer en meer in zwaar weer. En dat niet alleen, ook de toeleverende industrie heeft het zwaar.

En hoe langer het duurt hoe moeilijker het wordt om je hoofd boven water te houden. Want de inkomsten uit royalties (bijv. streaming) en auteursrechten komen met (grote) vertraging. Om daar verandering in te brengen is de website www.pleasedontstopthemusic.nl opgericht. Een website waar je je favoriete Nederlandse artiesten kunt steunen door het kopen en luisteren van Muziek & Merchandise via hun webshop. Zo kan er voor worden gezorgd dat onze artiesten straks kunnen blijven optreden. Please Don’t Stop The Music:

“Maar we willen er ook een plek van maken, waar je uiteindelijk het hele Nederlands muzieklandschap kan ontdekken. Van groot tot klein, elk genre en van de Waddeneilanden tot Limburg. Want die veelzijdigheid van artiesten maakt onze muziekindustrie tot een unieke. Nu je noodgedwongen thuis zit kan je vast wel wat nieuwe muziek gebruiken voor je verzameling. Dus misschien ontdek je je nieuwe lievelingsartiest, terwijl je je favoriete artiest steunt.”

En wat nou het allermooiste zou zijn, is als je ook iemand anders blij kan maken met muziek. Denk aan de mensen in de vitale beroepen. Die verdienen meer dan applaus alleen, die verdienen muziek waarbij ze zelf ook kunnen klappen.
