On July 25 in 1992 the first edition of London Calling took place. Acts like Tame Impala, The Libertines, Blur, Florence + The Machine, Franz Ferdinand, Mac DeMarco, Slowdive, Placebo, The Kooks, Kaiser Chiefs, White Lies en Two Door Cinema Club all played early in their careers.Now, 25 years later, we are celebrating this anniversary with a stellar line-up. Instead of looking back at this rich history, we tend to have acts on the bill that just as well become as big as these bands. Come join us at May 24 and May 25 in Paradiso. The next editon of London Calling will take place on 24 and 25 May in Paradiso.

In 1992 London Calling pop festival started out as a showcase festival for the biggest music talents from Great Britain. Nowadays London Calling has new, young and exciting bands from all over the world on the bill, but still manages to be a good stepping stone towards the bigger clubs and festivals.

Blokkenschema London Calling online

De laatste naam is binnen en de speeltijden zijn bepaald: hoog tijd om ook het blokkenschema bekend te maken. Niet om op te puzzelen hoor, want overlap tussen de optredens is er haast niet. Maar handig zijn die blokken natuurlijk wel. Bekijk hier het schema met alle 31 bands, inclusief de laatste toevoeging van de Amerikaanse band Ohtis. Ook het vermelden waard: Close Talker speelt op zaterdagmiddag om 15.00 uur in de Tuinzaal van Paradiso Noord. Het concert is onderdeel van het festival en toegankelijk voor alle London Calling-bezoekers.

Programma compleet met Ohtis

Met Ohtis als laatste naam is het programma compleet. De Amerikaanse band combineert donkere alt-country met het autobiografische verhaal van bandlid Sam Swinson. Eerlijk en confronterend, maar daarom zeker niet minder mooi. Eerder werden onder andere Hand Habits, Tropical Fuck Storm, Priests, Pottery en A.A. Bondy al aangekondigd. Bekijk hier alle namen.

Interview met G Flip

Op zaterdag 25 mei speelt G Flip op London Calling, maar in de daaropvolgende maanden zou ze zomaar wel eens kunnen uitgroeien tot een ware popsensatie. G Flip maakt namelijk laagdrempelige, licht-elektronische liedjes met pakkende refreinen die zó catchy zijn dat ze pop-liefhebbers van acht tot tachtig kunnen aanspreken. In aanloop naar London Calling hebben we haar geïnterviewd over haar muziek, haar tour en de keer dat ze in haar broek plaste bij een concert van HAIM. Lees het hele interview hier.

Aldous Harding met nieuw album naar Paradiso

Aldous Harding speelt op woensdag 27 november in de grote zaal van Paradiso te Amsterdam. De show staat in het teken van haar aanstaande vrijdag te verschijnen studioalbum ‘Designer’. De kaartverkoop start eveneens aanstaande vrijdag om 12:00 uur via paradiso.nl.

Een beetje een vreemde vogel is Aldous Harding wel. En die leggen gouden eieren. Zo ook mevrouw Harding. Samen met producer John Parish (o.a. PJ Harvey en ook van haar vorige album Party) heeft ze 9 waanzinnige songs op de tape gezet.

In haar muziek klinken verschillende personages en stemmingen door, soms zelfs in hetzelfde nummer. Dit geeft haar werk een prachtig donker randje, wat bevestigd wordt in haar diepzinnige songteksten en waardoor haar karateristieke stem nog meer opvalt. Niet voor niets wordt Aldous Harding vaak vergeleken met folklegendes als Joan Baez en Linda Perhacs. De vergelijking met Kate Bush en Sco tt Walker is ook snel gemaakt.

Aldous Harding was enkele jaren terug al te zien (voor de mensen die erin konden!) op Le Guess Who en gaf daar een weergaloze show. Deze zomer staat ze ook op Best Kept Secret in Hilvarenbeek. Rondom het vorige album heeft Harding dusdanig veel getourt dat ze nu alleen de juiste zalen en festivals eruit pikt en daarmee ook een stuk minder gaat spelen. Weest er dus op tijd bij!

Weyes Blood – Titanic Rising

Weyes Blood – Titanic Rising (SubPop/Konkurrent)

Onder haar pseudoniem Weyes Blood timmert Natalie Mering al een aantal jaren aan de weg, zonder door te breken naar een groter publiek. Daar kan met haar laatste worp Titanic Rising weleens rap verandering in gaan komen. De Californische verkeert in grootse vorm.

Ze maakt nog altijd eigenzinnige muziek zonder een knieval voor de commercie, maar het klinkt allemaal wat ambitieuzer dan voorheen. Laten we het zo maar noemen. De heerlijke gedateerdheid die de plaat kenmerkt maakt ‘m juist zo aantrekkelijk. Want horen we bijvoorbeeld niet om de haverklap vlagen van The Carpenters voorbij komen? Som zelfs meer dan vlagen.

Doordat Mering de kans kreeg met meer muzikanten te werken, zoals violisten, en er meer tijd was om te experimenteren en grote ideeën vast te leggen klinkt Titanic Rising groots en meeslepend. Niet alleen de jaren 70 galmen na, ook de jaren 80 zijn terug te horen. Er is geëxperimenteerd, door twee bandopnemers aan elkaar te verbinden. Dat leidde tot een intense feedback die overal verstopt is op de plaat. De spookachtige sfeer is daar een gevolg van.

Natalie Mering heeft de neiging bepaalde vormen van nostalgie te koesteren, zonder dat ze het doel heeft ideeën uit de jaren 70 te kapen. Zonder dat ze zich vast wil klampen aan ‘die goede ouwe tijd’ doet ze dat wel enigszins en dat levert dan zo’n prachtig album op. Pieter Visscher

Clipprimeur: Ivan & The Parazol – When I Was 17

De jongens van Ivan & the Parazol maken rockmuziek zoals ze die in de jaren zestig en zeventig ook maakten. Daar giet de band vervolgens een modern sausje overheen, waardoor het fris en aanstekelijk klinkt.

In thuisland Hongarije verkopen ze de grootste zalen uit en stonden ze meerdere malen op het hoofdpodium van Sziget. Inmiddels zijn er drie albums uit en is er een vierde op komst. Vandaag verschijnt de derde single When I Was 17, een eerbetoon aan de klassieke rock waar ze mee zijn opgegroeid. Deze nieuwe single staat op het aankomende album Exotic Post Traumatic welke op 22 maart verschijnt.

RY X – Unfurl (Infectious)

RY XRy Cuming beleefde als Ry X een vruchtbaar 2018. Volle zalen, festivaltenten die werden betoverend en een uitverkocht huis in een sfeervol Carré in Amsterdam. Zijn muziek is lastig in een hokje te plaatsen. Laten we dat vooral niet doen.

Cuming is in ieder geval van alle markten thuis. Hij maakte onderdeel uit van zowel Howling als The Acid. Elektronica, folk, techno, deephouse. Diverse stromingen komen in beide samenwerkingen aan bod. Maar stiekem is Cumings op z’n best als singer-songwriter Ry X, die op Unfurl – zijn tweede langspeler – wederom onder je huid kruipt.

Somber, melancholisch, soms hoopvol. En verrassend, zoals tijdens het bezwerende, breekbare Untold, waar een Burial-achtige drop het nummer op fraaie wijze omlijst. Mooi is het toverwoord op Unfurl. Het hart smelt. Dromen. Wegdromen. Zweven. Maar ook zachtjes heen en weer bewegen, als op een track als YaYaYa het fijnbesnaarde refrein wordt ingezet. Verder regeert een akoestisch gitaar. Bassiste en muze van Prince – Nik West op 13 maart in Paradiso

Nik West is vocaliste, songwriter en bassiste en staat bekend om haar hanenkam in de vorm van een bassleutel. Met haar funky baslijntjes, innemende stem en spectaculaire live-performance, kan ze inmiddels artiesten als Bootsy Collins, Quincy Jones, Prince en Lenny Kravitz tot haar fans rekenen.

Ze wisselt moeiteloos van zwoele r&b melodieën naar wat harde rocksolo’s. Echter blijven in haar geluid funklegendes als Marcus Miller en Larry Graham nooit ver weg.
