De Polletjes worden steeds beter in wat ze doen, het recreëren van sounds, stijlen en sferen die zo rond 1980 gangbaar werden, toen een nieuwe golf bands met synths na decennia lange overheersing van bands met gitaren een geslaagde greep naar de macht deden,

Niet alleen worden Matijs en Ruben Pol beter, ze krijgen ook steeds meer een eigen gezicht. De periode waaruit ze hun inspiratie plukken is onveranderd, maar het wordt steeds lastiger om ze te koppelen aan een duidelijk voorbeeld. Of hun bronnen worden wat obscuurder. Zo doet Masks aan Yellow Magic Orchestra denken, een baanbrekend Japanse synthipop trio uit de vroege jaren tachtig. Een album hebben de Polletjes nog niet. Masks zou een goede voorzet zijn.

Pol – L’Amour Fait Mal

De gebroeders Pol flikken het hem weer en komen met een heerlijke nieuwe new wave pastiche op de proppen. L’Amour Fait Mal klinkt zo authentiek dat je zou zweren dat het uit de jaren tachtig van de vorige eeuw stamt. Alleen de geluidskwaliteit verraadt dat het een eigentijdse opname is.

L’Amour Fait Mal (liefde doet pijn) is de vijfde single van Pol dat nu genoeg nummers heeft gespaard voor een EP. Jammer dat Matthijs en Ruben de laatste tijd zo weinig op de bühne te zien zijn. Tenzij ze aan een album werken natuurlijk.

Pol releases self-titled debut EP with lead single “L’Amour Fait Mal”

Dutch New Wave duo ‘Pol’ drop their highly anticipated self-titled debut EP. Consisting of brothers Ruben and Matthijs Pol their latest 5-track offering looks to bring New Wave to the forefront once again with their dynamic take on the genre. The lead single off the EP ‘L’Amour Fait Mal’ exemplifies this sound, crafting a rich analogue soundscape of textured synth lines and driving drum beats that sit behind a characteristically wistful vocal performance that ties the track together. Speaking on the track Pol states “’L’Amour Fait Mal’ is a harmonious blend of upbeat energy and poignant melancholy, encapsulating the essence of a new-wave love song.” Highly expressive in their songwriting the brothers took inspiration from their own personal experiences and self-exploration while writing the EP, examining personal challenges such as dealing with toxic masculinity and finding their place in the world, as well as the complex web of relationships with the people around them. Behind a backdrop of their alluring new wave sound sees Pol weave elements of post-punk and glam rock to create compelling compositions unique to them. Speak on the EP Pol explains, “Many of the songs carry deeper personal meanings beyond their initial simplicity. This emotional journey has been both heavy and rewarding, as we refused to settle for anything less than our best (with our current capabilities).” Based out of Amsterdam, Pol has released three singles from the EP to date, ‘Comme Ça’, ‘Boys Are’ and ‘Modern Strange Love’, garnering praise from the likes of Vogue Netherlands, CLASH Magazine and Record Of The Day to name a few while achieving over 1million streams across Spotify. Beyond music the two brothers channel forms of expression from their work in the high-fashion industry, modelling for various fashion houses (Saint Laurent, Gucci, Fendi, Valentino, Dior, to name a few). Now with the release of their debut EP, Pol looks to capitalise on their previous success as they aim to bring their own brand of new wave to the masses.

Pol – Boys Are

De gebroeders Ruben en Matthijs Pol debuteerden eerder dit jaar met een single die rechtstreeks uit de archieven van The Human League of een van de andere synthipop-pioniers leek te komen. Zo ‘echt’ klonk Comme Ça.

Ook Boy Are klinkt als een flash back naar de tijd dat de oorlog nog koud was. Het is goed te horen dat de Polletjes hun plezierige pastiches met kennis van zaken, maar vooral met liefde vervaardigen. Sound(effecten) en sfeer zijn authentiek en de beat is onweerstaanbaar.

De waardering van Ruben en Matthijs voor de new wave van de early eighties gaat gelukkig niet zo ver dat ze zich ook kleden in oversized glitterkostuums of hun haar stijlen in een windtunnel, maar verder klinken ze zo waarheidsgetrouw dat als je Phil Oakley Boys Are laat horen hij waarschijnlijk zal zeggen, ‘toffe track, maar ik kan me niet meer kan herinneren dat we het hebben opgenomen’.

Written, performed and produced by Ruben and Matthijs, and mixed by Dave Bascombe (Depeche Mode, Tears For Fears, Erasure), ‘Comme Ça’ is an affecting slice of new wave – replacing digitally produced sounds for analog synths and drum machine samples. Disconcerting and complex, speaking further about the track they say “Creating this track felt like telling a story, giving the listener a sort of ominous feeling each time. Taking the song from the demo to the final product took various steps. We can’t really recall in what order we did things, we were mainly sailing on intuition.”

“The song is about experiencing a disconnect with current society. The girl is being used as a metaphor for society as a whole. There is a sense of absolute loneliness. Not being able to connect with anyone on any level – but then somehow accepting that and drawing energy from it, symbolised in the energy of the music.”
