Remember Sports – Pinky Ring

Remember Sports is een 50/50 m/v band uit het studenten stadje Gambier in Ohio. Tenminste daar liepen Carmen, Jack, Catherine en Connor elkaar tegen het lijf een jaar of zes geleden.

De respons op het drietal albums dat ze tot nu toe hebben uitgebracht was van dien aard dat ze hun band hebben opgewaardeerd van hobbyproject tot ‘het zou weleens iets kunnen worden’. Om het lot een handje te helpen zijn ze naar het centraler gelegen Philadelphia verkast. 

Remember Sports maakt powerpop, enthousiasmerende kop-staart liedjes met kittig gitaar werk en pittige dameszang. Pinky Ring is mogelijk hun sterkste song/performance /productie tot nu toe. Dat belooft dus wat voor het nieuwe album dat op 23 maart uitkomt en Like A Stone gaat heten.

Teddy’s Hit – Suffer

Suffer is weer zo’n geslaagde tegendraadse rocksong van Teddy’s Hit. Het Amsterdams trio bracht begin dit jaar hun debuutalbum uit en vulde daarmee een groot deel van het gat dat is achtergebleven na het verscheiden van Indian Askin. Net als die band heeft Teddy’s Hit een werkzame balans gevonden tussen radiovriendelijke rock en prikkelende clubmuziek.  

Suffer is stoer en subtiel tegelijk, de zang is punky, het gitaarwerk is afwisselend lyrisch en rockend. Het zou niet verbazen als de band goed bekend is met het werk van Tom Verlaine’s Television. Het beste nieuws is dat er op het albumdebuut van Teddy’s Hit nog veel meer van dit soort slijtvaste gitaarjuweeltjes staan. 

Magnetic Spacemen – Globetrotter

Magnetic Spacemen is een gruizige en melodische garage band. Garagerock en surfy postpunk-songs zorgen live voor een onvoorspelbare en met zweet doordrenkte show. Zo’n band waar je naar verlangt als je na lange tijd weer naar buiten mag. Een band met een sound en podiumpresentatie die bol staat van energie, gekte en toffe songs om je aan over te geven en je doet verlangen naar een volle beukende pit.

Magnetic Spacemen maakte al twee EP’s en een album, maar na een bandbezettingswisseling, een nieuw label en hun beste werk tot nu toe voelt “Papoya Poya” misschien wel als HET begin van deze voortrazende garage trein. Globetrotter is alvast de eerste single.

Het album werd opgenomen in een leegstaande club in Den Haag net aan het begin van de eerste lockdown in maart 2020. Alles werd op analoge tape geslingerd door bassist Redmer Kamsma. De spanning rondom de pandemie, de angst, de illegale sfeer van rondhangen, de onbezorgdheid die bij het vuilnis kon en onzekerheid over de toekomst geven de plaat een extra urgente trap onder zijn kont na.

Voor wie de band nog niet kent, file under acts als: Oh Sees, FIDLAR, Pixies, Meatbodies en together PANGEA.

Live is Magnetic Spacemen een enorme bonk energie. Ze speelden reeds supports van bands als FIDLAR in Amsterdam en Berlijn en tourden twee keer de UK rond met VANT.

“Papoya Poya” verschijnt in augustus 2021 via Goomah Music.

Monokino – Bend Or Break

Monokino is de artiestennaam van George van Wetering, een smart-rocker uit Amsterdam. Monokino schijnt wereldberoemd te zijn in China, niet geheel onbekend in de V.S. en graag gezien in Canada.

Niet alleen heeft George al heel wat van de wereld gezien, tijdens zijn omzwervingen heeft hij ook mogen samenwerken met o.a. Bowie producer Tony Visconti en retronaut Jacco Gardner. Monokino is dus al even bezig. Mocht er een nieuw album komen zijn dan wordt het zijn derde.

Bend Or Break komt dus niet uit de lucht vallen. En dat hoor je. De uitgekristalliseerde sound wordt voor een groot deel bepaald door George’s karakteristiek nasale stemgeluid. Zijn zang doet wel aan Brian Molko van Placebo denken. Verder vallen de snedige gitaren op, de slimme productie en de sterke refreinen waarin George een canon met zich zelf lijkt te zingen.

Vanwege corona zal Monokino zijn activiteiten voorlopig tot de lage landen moeten beperken. Jammer voor hem, maar goed voor ons.

Manchester Orchestra – Bed Head

The wait is over: following a cryptic, 7-day countdown initiated upon the completion of last Friday’s live screening of A Black Mile To The Surface: The Global Concert Film, Manchester Orchestra today announced their new album The Million Masks of God will be released April 30, 2021 via Loma Vista / Concord / Spinefarm Records in Europe.

The Black Mile film—a front-to-back performance of the band’s 2017 instant-classic album that saw over 7,000 viewers tune-in live and now has over 100,000 streams to date—culminated in the launch of TheMillionMasksOfGod.com, which revealed teasers of the album art as well as instrumental stems from the urgent and sweeping first single, “Bed Head.” The song debuted last night via SiriusXM’s Alt Nation ‘Advanced Placement,’ and can now be heard alongside the cinematic, Andrew Donoho-directed video that finds a home haunted by a spectral Andy Hull.

“‘Bed Head’ is two old friends existing in two separate realities,” explains Hull. “It’s a conversation about the lives they lived, the consequences of life’s decisions, and finding purpose in trying to be better.” With special effects of Poltergeist-level proportion, the “Bed Head” mini-supernatural thriller film mirrors the song’s howling close, and ranks among the best in the band’s canon of celebrated visuals.

Produced by Manchester Orchestra’s lead songwriting duo of Hull and Robert McDowell, Catherine Marks (PJ Harvey, The Killers) and Ethan Gruska (Phoebe Bridgers), The Million Masks Of God presents an even grander scale of the epic and re-focused approach to record-making that the Atlanta, GA-based band has forged in recent years. Their sixth album finds Hull, McDowell, Tim Very (drums), and Andy Prince (bass) relentlessly pushing themselves to create a work that breaks beyond the scope and limits of every previous release in an effort to create their most towering achievement to date, all while sorting through the aftermath of a devastating loss.

The Million Masks Of God can be seen, in a way, as the band’s sophomore album following a rebirth with Black Mile, and Hull’s early concept for it was a natural extension of the main theme of its predecessor. “If Black Mile was this idea of ‘from birth to death,’ this album would really be more about ‘from birth to beyond, focusing on the highs and lows of life and exploring what could possibly come next,’” he explains.

Manchester Orchestra approached Masks with the intention of creating tightly-woven “movie albums” designed to be listened to in sequence and in a single sitting, with the songs working together to tell a bold, long-form narrative. The Million Masks of God explores the loose story of a man’s encounter with the angel of death as he’s shown various scenes from his life in a snapshot-style assemblage. Some moments he witnesses are good, some are bad, some difficult, some commendable—in other words, they depict an entirely normal life. Initially based on a fictitious character, Masks began to process real-time emotions as McDowell’s father entered the toughest part of his fight with cancer, eventually losing the battle in 2019. “It started off really abstract, but as Robert’s dad’s fight with cancer got harder and harder those last couple years, I started making parallels in my mind to what I was actually writing about,” Hull explains. “It became an examination of my own faith. While Robert’s dad’s story certainly influenced this album, it’s equally about me coming to grips with the realness of adulthood and that there’s an expiration date to all of this—and how you’re going to live your life knowing that.”

Bull – Eugene

Twee jaar geleden is Eugene ook al een keer uitgekomen. We hebben de single van Bull toen ook gedraaid. Helaas waren we een van de weinigen en is Eugene een stille dood gestorven. Jammer en onterecht vindt de band, hun nieuwe label en wij dus ook. Vandaar de rerelease c.q. herkansing.

Bull is een Britse band die een tijd in Berlijn heeft rondgehangen en in Amsterdam, waar ze Eugene opnamen alvorens weer op huis af te stevenen. Het viertal maakt vrij perfecte pop, een mix van Amerikaanse slacker rock en Britse powerpop. Eugene begint rustige en poppy met mooie koortjes, maar net als je denkt we houden het soft vandaag komt er een stevige break die eindigt met een opgefokte gitaarsolo. Daarna volgt nog een stukje fraaie falsetzang. En dan is het alweer voorbij.

Of Eugene dit keer wel zal worden opgepikt is moeilijk te zeggen. De eerste release in 2019 bleef mede onopgemerkt omdat de band toen bij een klein labeltje zat. Nu zit Bull bij de grootste platenmaatschappij ter wereld. Dat is nog steeds geen garantie voor succes, maar het vergroot de scoringskansen aanzienlijk. Als Eugene dus straks overal te horen is, kan je zeggen, oh die draaide Pinguin twee jaar geleden al ;).

The Lazy Eyes – Where’s My Brain???

In de meeste landen is concertbezoek onder de 18 niet toegestaan. Die regel geldt ook in het Australische Sydney, de plaats waar de boys van The Lazy Eyes vandaan komen. Zij zaten al in een band toen ze nog maar 15 waren. Voor hen was de 18+ regel dus extra frusterend omdat ze hun helden en ook hun collega’s niet konden zien. Nu ze zelf (net) de magische grens van 18 gepasseerd zijn organiseren ze matinees speciaal voor de schoolgaande jeugd. 

Waarschijnlijk zal er wel streng gecontroleerd worden aan de deur, want als je Where’s My Brain hoort weet je dat The Lazy Eyes niet geheel nuchter door het leven gaan. Of de band heeft gewoon een levendige fantasie. Of ze zijn erg fan van King Gizzard. Dat kan natuurlijk ook. 

De nieuwe single van The Lazy Eyes is nauw verwant aan het werk van de King Gizzard clan en ook wel aan dat van Pond en Babe Rainbow enz. De aanstichters van de Australische psych-rock golf, Tame Impala mag dan dan overgelopen zijn naar de mainstream, de band heeft school gemaakt. De vier The Lazy Eyes horen tot de ijverigste leerlingen. 

Popwarmer: Chet Faker – Get High

Nick Murphy blies zijn in 2012 begonnen project Chet Faker vorig jaar oktober nieuw leven in met de single Low na een aantal jaren stil te zijn geweest met zijn electro r&b/pop. Hij bracht wel meer experimentele muziek onder zijn eigen naam. En het blijft niet bij Low, nu is er de nieuwe single Get High en die is deze week de Popwarmer op Pinguin Pop. Een spannend nummer met catchy piano intro. Chet Faker zegt erover: “Sometimes you just need a break. I find myself wanting to escape just for a little while and the song sort of showed up on its own.” We zijn benieuwd naar nog meer smooth werk van de Australische multi-instrumentalist.

 

GIRLI – What A Shame

‘So You Think You Can Fuck With Me‘, zo heette de eerste single van GIRLI. Het nummer kwam zes jaar geleden uit. GIRLI, echte naam Milly Toomy was toen net 17. Nu 6 jaar en 38 nummers verder weten we het antwoord wel, Don’t Fuck With Milly! Voor buitenstaanders was het al snel duidelijk dat Milly niet zonder handschoenen kon worden aangepakt. Milly zelf lijkt er wat langer over te hebben gedaan om te ontdekken wie of wat ze nou echt was.

Haar debuutsingle is J-Pop, manga stijl. Daarna heeft ze zo’n beetje elk genre beoefend dat sinds de opkomst van Elvis 66 jaar geleden de kop op heeft gestoken Ook op persoonlijk vlak heeft de Britse zangeres zich ontwikkeld en o.a. ontdekt dat ze niet zo eenduidig GIRLI is dan ze als puber dacht.

Nu Milly de twintig ruim is gepasseerd verkeert ze mentaal en muzikaal in wat rustiger vaarwater. Dat ze haar oude alias heeft aangehouden komt omdat ze zich tegenwoordig associeert met de vrouwelijke sub-divisie van de grunge uit de jaren 90, de stijl die als riot grrrl de boeken is ingegaan. Milly heeft haar nieuwe stiel dan ook Riot GRRRLI gedoopt.

Twee dingen zijn er sinds haar debuutsingle niet veranderd, GIRLI had en heeft roze haar. En ze kan wel wat.
